About The Role

The New York Times is looking for a product-minded Senior Engineering Manager to lead iOS and Android development within our Storytelling group.

In this role, you will guide delivery of news format and visual journalism innovation in the Times' iOS and Android applications. You'll also collaboratively shape the strategy for the group's approach to iOS, Android and Hybrid mobile engineering. Within this, you'll manage and grow a native engineering team.

Through this work, you'll expand the reach of our newsroom's mission into mobile platforms and touch the lives of millions of readers around the world.

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters, reporting to the Senior Director of Storytelling Engineering. You can typically expect to come into our office two days a week.

Responsibilities

Build and operate a highly performant iOS and Android engineering team Foster a culture of innovation, product thinking, and engineering excellence Partner closely with Product, Design, and engineers on the team to define and deliver exceptional, distinctive mobile news storytelling experiences Develop and lead technical strategies for news experiences in our mobile applications with a 12-18 month vision Lead development of flexible architectures that allow us to tweak and iterate quickly, in response news-driven ideas Ensure all work that released is performant, and secure Manage a cohesive technical vision across iOS, Android, and Hybrid technologies Bridge the team's work into the wider iOS, Android, and Hybrid communities at NYT Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications

3+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager, leading native iOS or Android engineers Experience setting and executing technical strategies to deliver complex mobile UX Demonstrated history of delivering high-quality, performant, and reliable features

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with video or other rich media handling Experience with hybrid mobile development technologies and their integration Background in media, news, or other content-driven application development

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$176,000 - $205,000 USD
