Job Description Summary
The Senior Counsel will provide legal counsel on matters related to marketing and distribution of insurance products and operating an insurance agency.
Responsibilities:
Provide legal advice and support regarding the marketing and sale of insurance products primarily through a retail field force of independent contractor insurance agents.
Prepare, review, and negotiate legal contracts, documents, and agreements, such as selling agreements, distribution agreements, and agent agreements.
Support the agency in pre-litigation, litigation, regulatory examinations, and investigations, and represent the agency to regulators.
Collaborate with compliance staff in drafting policies and procedures and reviewing sales, advertising, and marketing materials, incentive programs, sales contests, and field compensation plans.
Monitor, review, and interpret applicable and proposed state and federal guidance, laws, rules, and regulations related to insurance distribution.
Work on complex legal issues requiring analysis of multiple factors.
Participate in departmental and cross-functional legal working groups.
Required Qualifications:
JD from an accredited law school
Licensed or eligible to practice in-house in the US
At least 5 years of experience as an attorney, including in the US life insurance industry
Effective communication skills, both written and oral
Sound judgment in a fast-paced environment
Agility and adaptability in providing legal advice
Comfort in a rapidly changing corporate environment
Proficiency in MS Office
Strong organizational and project management skills
Ability to work autonomously, manage multiple priorities, and pay attention to detail
Working Conditions:
Hybrid office environment
Occasional travel within the US and/or Canada

Compensation:
The salary generally ranges between $170,000 - $180,000 annually. The actual starting pay depends on qualifications, experience, location, work setting, and operational needs. Salary may vary above or below this range as permitted by law.
This position may be eligible for an annual bonus based on company and individual performance, at the company's discretion.
