Job Description and Requirements: We are seeking a multidisciplinary engineer to join the Transduction Device and Array Development Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL's mission is to develop innovative solutions for scientific, engineering, and technological challenges supporting the Navy, DoD, and IC. The role involves designing, analyzing, fabricating, and testing underwater acoustic transduction systems, utilizing knowledge in mechanical, electrical, acoustic, and material sciences to develop sonar transducer and array designs. ARL is a DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes transitioning military members. Responsibilities include: Analyzing, designing, and testing sonar transducers and arrays Designing mechanical packaging concepts Designing fabrication tooling and test beds Creating and implementing assembly procedures Providing oversight and technical leadership in transducer fabrication and testing Developing and presenting technical and project reports Managing project schedules and budgets Collaborating with team members, customers, and vendors A strong work ethic, eagerness to learn, and solid technical foundation are essential; prior experience in underwater acoustic transducer design is not required, as on-the-job training will be provided. Higher-level responsibilities include: Managing multiple or large projects Contributing to project feasibility assessments Expanding transduction technology Maintaining relationships with major customers and grantors Securing follow-on funding and initiating new projects The position can be at the advanced or senior professional level, depending on education and experience. Minimum requirements: Bachelor's in Engineering or Science; Master's preferred; 5+ years of related experience for the advanced level. Additional experience or education is needed for higher levels. Required skills include: Bachelor’s or Master’s in relevant fields Mechanical or electrical design Problem-solving fundamentals Technical writing and data analysis Proficiency in MATLAB, Excel, PowerPoint, CAD Preferred skills include: Acoustics Dimensional tolerance analysis Underwater transducer/array design and fabrication Project management Active security clearance This position is fully on-site in State College, PA. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, subject to security investigation, and pass a pre-employment drug screen. The salary range is $109,300 - $191,000.
