Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver - the world's most experienced driver - to improve access to mobility while saving lives lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can be applied to various vehicle platforms and use cases. It has provided over one million rider-only trips, autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states. The Driver Understanding and Evaluation team at Waymo develops a comprehensive understanding of the Waymo Driver's behavior. With over 1 million driverless miles per week, it is critical to assess vehicle behavior both in the field and in simulation through automated algorithms. The learned metrics team aims to leverage machine learning to scale these assessments and meet Waymo's objectives. We collaborate across teams to deploy ML in production systems and develop Waymo's reward function. Our work involves building and operating large-scale machine learning and data systems, simulation workflows, and insight tools. We combine expert human judgment with advanced machine learning models to generate training and evaluation data for the Waymo Driver. We seek passionate researchers and software engineers dedicated to developing production-grade machine learning systems for autonomous vehicles and continuously enhancing our technology stack. You will: Report to the TLM for the Learned Metrics Team Develop ML models to evaluate autonomous vehicle behavior Build ML infrastructure supporting high-performance models Collaborate across teams to bring state-of-the-art solutions into production You have: BS in Computer Science, Robotics, Statistics, Physics, Math, or related field, or equivalent experience At least 2 years of experience building production ML models Proficiency in coding and designing production systems (Python / C++) Background in applied Deep Learning Proven track record of improving model quality We prefer: 4+ years of experience in building production ML models Experience with reinforcement learning, transfer learning, or related areas Experience handling large-scale data and models The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is $204,000 $259,000 USD.
