At SES AI, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. The base pay range for this role is between $150,000 and $250,000. SES AI considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and skills.

Position Scope
The SES AI Prometheus team (AI Research) is seeking exceptional Machine Learning Scientists to lead the development of our Large Language Models (LLM) and AI agents. This role involves leveraging internal expertise and collaborating with academic labs to advance research in machine learning for scientific discovery, especially in material science and battery technology.
As a Large Language Model Scientist, you will build and deploy large-scale, multimodal language models, AI agents, and related algorithms, transforming the material science discovery process by enabling machines to analyze literature and innovate like scientists.
This role requires a passion for technical problem-solving and a proven record of delivering innovative machine learning solutions. Responsibilities include pretraining LLMs on material science literature, fine-tuning with battery data, and creating AI agents to foster innovation in battery material discovery.
The position is remote.
Responsibilities
- Lead research in machine learning for scientific discovery, focusing on (multimodal) large language models and AI agents in battery and material discovery.
- Optimize training processes of large language models, resolving issues related to data quality, architecture, and computational efficiency.
- Design, develop, and deploy machine learning models in production, ensuring scalability and reliability.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external scientific partners to solve complex problems and publish research findings.
Qualifications
- MS or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- At least 5 years of experience in machine learning and NLP, with focus on LLMs and AI agents preferred.
- Proven publication record in top ML conferences/journals.
- Proficient in Python and deep learning frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Track record of delivering innovative ML solutions.
- Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with external partners.
