Position Purpose

Assists in keeping assigned equipment in a state of operational excellence.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Maintains all equipment in a safe working condition, while adhering to all shop maintenance requirements and responsibilities.
- Performs parts installation and mechanical diagnostics and repairs of various gasoline and diesel units.
- Performs repairs to engines by rebuilding blocks; troubleshoots engines and transmissions; repairs hydraulic, electrical, fuel, and brakes systems.
- Performs diagnostics and repairs of electrical powered equipment and propane powered equipment.
- Identifies and resolves various maintenance repair problems.
- Accurately documents labor and materials on work orders.
- Operates hand/power tools, hydraulic jacks, and other allied tools using common safety practices.
- Trains and serves as lead worker for apprentice mechanics, to ensure maintenance and repair of equipment are performed according to safety and quality guidelines.
- Maintains clean and safe shop environment and provides routine shop equipment care.
- Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.
- Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
- Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

- Knowledge of vehicle and equipment tools, repairs and safety.
- Knowledge of safety protocols, including District rules and regulations, OSHA, and Texas rules of the road.
- Knowledge of diesel, gasoline, LPG, and electrical drive engine/motor maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of electronic media. (smart phones, note pads, tablets, and so forth) to access work orders and facilitate communication.
- Skill in determining if measures and clearances are within specifications.
- Skill in reading and comprehending repair manuals and guidelines on equipment, including operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Skill in the safe operation and utilization of small equipment. (Landscaping, Warehouse, Custodial).
- Ability to drive and/or operate for test drives and diagnostics.
- Ability to pick-up and deliver equipment before/after repairs.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules.
- Ability to access and use service materials.
- Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and physical exam.
- Ability to follow directives and work with master mechanics and/or forepersons on advanced repairs.
- Ability to properly load a trailer, and drive with a trailer.
- Ability to use software to access databases, email, status work assignments, and do word processing.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
- Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
- Tools/Equipment Used: Diagnostic equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding/cutting torch equipment; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; District vehicles with or without trailers; computer, tablet, and/or hand-held technology and peripherals.
- Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting; occasional crouching or crawling; occasional stair climbing; works in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
- Motion: Frequent use of body weight and back to obtain leverage and/or lift; moderate walking, climbing; frequent use of hands for fine manipulation; frequent repetitive hand motions, including grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse, or touch-screens via tablet and/or hand-held technology device and peripherals; moderate driving.
- Lifting: Frequent lifting and carrying in excess of 50 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds.
- Exerting: Frequent exerting in excess of 50 pounds of force to move objects; occasional exerting in excess of 100 pounds.
- Environment: Works inside 20% with heating but without air conditioning; works 80% outside; works on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, and electrical hazards; traffic hazards when responding to work orders on the road including trailers; works around machinery with moving parts; vibration to hand and arm from power tools; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; regularly works irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours.
- Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
- Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
- Education: Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency required;
- Specialized training from an accredited college, technical, or trade school preferred;
- 1 year vocational/technical training from an accredited institution may substitute for 1 year of experience with approval by FWISD Small Equipment Shop.
- Certification/License: Clear and valid Texas Driver's License required; Insurable by the District's insurance carrier required;
- Clear and valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (Class A CDL or Class B CDL) preferred;
- Certification in small engine diagnostics repair and operation preferred.
- Experience: 5 years' experience in preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and/or repairs required;
- Experience may include combinations of the following types of work:
- 3-5 years' in major component overhaul and repair;
- 0-2 years' in preventive maintenance, minor component overhaul and repair on diesel, gasoline, LPG, and electrical equipment or engines;
- 1 year vocational/technical training from an accredited institution may substitute for 1 year of experience with approval by FWISD Small Equipment Shop.

- Employees must provide necessary personal tools to perform assigned duties.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- NO positive drug or alcohol tests including pre-employment, random, post-accident or reasonable suspicion.
- Driving and accident record:
- NO more than 2 violations during previous 36 months including:
- moving traffic violations (including no more than 1 preventable accident);
- failure to provide proof of valid driver's license or proof of insurance;
- equipment violations.
- NO Driving Under the Influence (DUI) for drug or alcohol.
- NO leaving scene of an accident (bodily injury or physical damage).
- NO vehicular assault, manslaughter, or homicide.
- NO operating a vehicle with suspended or revoked driver's license.
- NO reckless driving, speed contests, drag racing, or highway racing.
- NO use of a vehicle in commission of a felony.
- NO operating a vehicle without owner's permission (unauthorized use or grand theft).
- NO permitting an unlicensed person to drive.
- NO speeding more than 20 mph over the posted speed limit.
- NO history of a conviction in a commercial or personal motor vehicle.
- Additional restrictions may apply if directed by FWISD's Fleet Insurance Carrier.
