nGENERAL SUMMARY:
nUnder general supervision, performs routine and complex analytic procedures on blood
nand/or other body fluids or specimens, involving manual techniques or the use of
nlaboratory instruments and information systems.
nPRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Performs routine and complex biological, chemical, cytological, hematological, n
histologic, immunological, microscopic, and/or bacteriological tests procedures on
nlaboratory specimens, using manual or automated techniques and information
nsystems, for the purpose of diagnosing, preventing, or treatment of disease. The
nMedical Laboratory Scientist is qualified to perform duties described here, and, in a
ngiven job situation may or may not perform all of the duties as actual duties will
npertain to the specific assignment.

- Applies knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take action n
and/or develop solutions. Collaborates with leadership staff to improve processes
nand resolve problems, including:
na) Evaluating instrument performance and quality control results to ensure the
naccuracy and reliability of all analytic data prior to release.
nb) Correlating results with other lab data and/or disease states.
nc) Identification of technical, instrument, pharmacologic and/or physiologic
ncauses of unexpected test results.

- Performs calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting n
of laboratory equipment, instruments and/or laboratory information systems.
nFollowing successful completion of competency testing may perform processing,
ntesting, and reporting without direct supervision.

- Complies with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, n
including compliance, quality assessment and improvement, safety, environmental,
nand infection control. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.

- Participates in various quality assessment and improvement activities including, n
proficiency testing, gathering data for quality assurance monitors, developing and
nadhering to safe work practices, participating in quality improvement committees,
nand successfully completes regular competency assessments. Maintains the
nlaboratory and procedures in inspection ready condition.
nEDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required. n
Coursework must align with duties of the specific section Medical Laboratory
ndiscipline position and meet the education Eligibility Routes for Medical Laboratory
nScientist listed on the ASCP website at (ascp.org); or possesses a categorical
nscientist level certification as a BB, C, CG, CT, M, MB; or has met the requirements
nfor AAB and/or AMT certifications.

Requires six months of experience in a medical laboratory setting.

Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform

laboratory functions are required.
