Motion Recruitment
Our client is a pioneering laser technology manufacturer based in Boston, delivering high-performance photonics solutions for applications in aerospace, industrial automation, and defense. Their cutting-edge products are built on precision, reliability, and innovation. They are expanding their engineering team and seeking an Opto-Mechanical Engineer who is passionate about designing and integrating mechanical and optical systems for next-generation laser technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and validate opto-mechanical assemblies for advanced laser systems, including optical mounts, alignment mechanisms, beam delivery components, and thermal management structures.
- Collaborate closely with optical, electrical, and manufacturing teams to translate optical requirements into robust mechanical designs that meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability goals.
- Perform detailed tolerance analyses, thermal and structural simulations, and vibration modeling to ensure long-term stability and precision alignment of optical systems.
- Support optical system integration, including alignment, assembly, and testing in both lab and production environments.
- Contribute to design reviews, prototyping, and root cause analysis of mechanical and optical performance issues.
- Lead continuous improvement efforts to enhance the reliability, packaging efficiency, and ruggedization of laser systems for demanding operational environments.
- Generate and maintain accurate design documentation, including 3D models, 2D drawings, BOMs, and test procedures.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- 8-15 years of experience in mechanical design with a strong focus on opto-mechanical systems, laser packaging, or precision instrumentation.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred), optical layout software (Zemax or equivalent a plus), and GD&T.
- Experience designing systems with precision alignment, thermal sensitivity, and optical cleanliness requirements.
- Familiarity with optical components (lenses, mirrors, fiber couplers, beam splitters) and their integration into compact, stable mechanical assemblies.
- Hands-on experience with lab-based alignment, interferometry, or laser system prototyping is highly desirable.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills in cross-disciplinary environments.
