Job Function
Reporting into the Maintenance Supervisor, the Multi-Skilled Mechanic will be based out of Baltimore, MDand will be responsible for ensuring the efficient maintenance and operation of our plant equipment, buildings, and facilities within a unionized environment. This role demands technical proficiency, and a collaborative approach in working alongside hourly maintenance employees and instrumentation technicians.
Responsibilities
Pipe-fitting
Understands basic pipe-fitting theory and fluid dynamics. Knows proper use of levels, plumb bobs and layout techniques. Can identify and use various types of piping materials and schedules. Can operate pipe-threading equipment. Can perform proper gasket and bolt-up techniques. Can bevel and prep butt-weld fit ups. Knows proper welding rod for given metallurgy. Able to install and repair various types of industrial valves. Able to run and connect copper and stainless-steel tubing.
Welding/Burning
Understands concepts of welding, various joints and joint fit ups. Set-up and use cutting torch. Stick welds carbon steel plate and structural material, stainless steel plate and structural material, carbon steel pipe (all positions). Brazing and soldering, carbon and plasma arc gouging.
Millwright/Machinist
Understands theory of thermal expansion. Operates shop lathe and milling machine. Ability to properly use calipers, micrometers, feeler gauges and dial indicators. Understanding of various types of pumps, pump components, lubricants and lubricating systems. Rebuilds gear boxes and gear reducers, pumps, blowers, screws and conveyors. Assists in maintaining spare parts inventory.
Equipment Operation/Rigging
Understands theory of rigging, rigging safety, use of barricades, load balancing and spreader devices hazard identification and tag lines. Operates forklift, front-end loader and hydraulic crane. Sets up and uses air compressors and pneumatic tools.
Select and use proper type and size rigging for a job. Sets up and uses chain falls and lever hoists (properly).
Electrical
Understands basic electrical power theory and related safety hazards and proper/safe work procedures, electrical elements and components, terms and definitions, overload protection, fuses and circuit breakers, electrical symbols on construction drawings.
General Knowledge and Education
Possess math skills necessary to perform essential job functions and Quality requirements. Must be able to perform addition, subtraction, division and multiplication, be able to effectively use fractions and decimals and convert from one to the other. Must understand metric measurements. Quality requires the individual to collect various types of quantifiable data and plot these on to a control chart. Uses of averages, ranges and standard deviations.
Must be able to read instruction manuals, written job procedures, safety policies, MSDS, hazard warnings, and Quality related material.
Working Conditions
Physical-Ergonomic
- Lifting: Required to lift vehicle parts and components weighing up to 80 lbs. without assistance. Carries tools and/or equipment to the job site which may be up to 300 ft. from the tool locker or warehouse.
- Climbing: Climb stairs to catwalks. Erect and climb scaffolding. Climb portable and fixed ladders.
- Crawling: Crawl beneath equipment to make repairs. Work inside of confined spaces in which entry and exit is through small excess ports requiring the employee to do considerable bending and twisting of his/her body to facilitate entry.
- Pushing/Pulling: Push/pull parts (weighing up to 50 lbs.)
- into place for installation and/or repair.
- Cramped/awkward positions: Push/pull parts into place while standing or stooping in cramped areas requiring considerable physical agility.
- Bends/stoops: Bend over equipment to repair parts and to lift parts in to or out of vehicle. Stoop to make repairs on parts located close to the ground.
- Walking Surfaces: Walk on wet outdoor surfaces such as asphalt and concrete. May work on surfaces slippery from oil or product.
- Pound/hammer: Use 12 lb. sledgehammer to loosen bolts and to perform other activities.
- Elevated spaces: Walk and works on elevated catwalks and structures up to 90ft. above ground level.
- Oil and Dirt: Exposed to Manganese and overall dust. Work with oils, industrial lubricants and solvents, gasoline and fuel oil, hydraulic fluid and heat-transfer fluid up to 90% of working hours.
- High Temperatures: Temperatures may reach 120 degrees in certain areas. Exposed to temperatures on 90 degrees and above for most of summer months.
- Cold Temperatures: Temperatures in winter months average 30-35 degrees and may drop to as low as 0 degrees.
- Noise: Exposed to loud industrial noise of up to 90 dBA during 75% of working hours.
- Chemical Materials: Handle cleaning solvents and other chemicals that require SDS information. Exposure to hazardous chemicals is 20% of total working hours.

Required Experience
- Previous experiences as a Multi-Skilled Mechanic
- 5-8 years relevant industrial maintenance experience or
- Previous Experience as a First-Class Mechanic
- 3-5 years relevant industrial maintenance experience and on the job evaluation resulting in a score of at least 80% on the Maintenance Skills Matrix (requires minimum two years working as a lower-class mechanic to qualify for evaluation) or
- Previous Experience as a Second-Class Mechanic
- 1-3 years relevant industrial maintenance experience and
- On the job evaluation resulting in a score of at least 70% on the Maintenance Skills Matrix (requires minimum three years working as a lower-class mechanic to qualify for evaluation)
