Burns & McDonnell is growing its renewable energy business and is seeking an Electrical Engineer with a passion for renewable energy to help growth this business in our Phoenix Office. This position will partner with a multi-discipline team to develop electrical substations designs to support wind, solar, and battery renewable energy projects.

This position will be responsible for the overall work product of renewable substation projects, with a heavy focus on technical skillset, quality, and value engineering. Additionally, this role will establish and maintain a professional and satisfactory relationship with the Owner and other project stakeholders at the client. The renewable industry is a fast-growing industry. This role will require an entrepreneurial spirit and strong leadership abilities to deliver on the opportunity ahead. Renewable energy design experience is preferred.

Primary responsibilities for this position will include:

  • n

    Thinking creatively to address the complex challenges faced by the largest renewable generators in North America.

    n
  • n
  • n

    Substation physical design including yard layout plans, sections, and details; grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior, and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bill of material.

  • n

    Substation protection and control design including panel arrangements, single lines, three lines, AC/DC schematics, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring.

  • n

    Performing calculations pertinent to the substation design including but not limited to AC/DC System sizing, Lightning Protection, Lighting Calculations, Grounding Study etc.

    Performing or overseeing quality reviews of design packages.

  • n

    Ability to provide value engineering principles to drive low-cost, reliable designs for our clients.

    Preparing equipment specifications.

  • n

    Providing support for our clients during construction.

    n
  • n
  • n

    Performing field inspections and compliance documentation.

    n
  • n
  • n

    Leading a team of single- or multi-discipline professionals to ensure project success.

  • n

    Presenting designs and proposals to clients, permitting authorities, public interest groups.

    n
  • n
  • n

    Performing field inspections and compliance documentation.

    n
  • n
  • n

    Prepare proposals, assist in presentations, and participate in contract negotiations.

  • n

    Meeting with clients, contractors, and vendors.

    n
  • n
  • n

    Leverage existing client relationships, create new client relationships, and focus on repeat work within each client account.

Qualifications

n
    n
  • n

    Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.

    n
  • n
  • n

    Or Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

    n
  • n
  • n

    Master of Science degree in Engineering may be substituted for one year experience.

  • n

    Three (3) years of substation electrical engineering experience on renewable projects. Five years of experience strongly preferred.

  • n

    Desire to advance into leadership roles.

  • n

    Proficiency with National Electrical Safety Code and IEEE / ANSI and NETA Standards

    n
  • n
  • n

    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • n
  • n

    Strong computer skills.

  • n

    Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.

  • n

    Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.

    Knowledge of working with ISOs like CAISO, ERCOT or MISO in terms of interconnection requirements will be an added advantage.
