YOUR KEY CONTRIBUTIONS
Our Lead Mechanical Design Engineer is a strategic visionary, an inventor, and leads by example. Beyond delivering a vision for Omega's mechanical design, you will get to feel, test, and iterate your solutions, and appreciate just how essential they are to a machine's operation, your team's goals, and the company's future.
Your immediate contributions will be to:
  • Lead the department to design new and innovative machines and assemblies
  • Provide conceptual design, engineering, and detailing
  • Identify and execute cost reducing, quality improving, projects and needed refresh of existing designs
  • Influence and maintain the design standards that will shape future machines
YOUR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the direction and completion of mechanical engineering design tasks for the mechanical engineering group
  • Conceptualize new machine designs or subassemblies, leveraging existing designs when appropriate
  • Lead collaborative design efforts that assure inclusion and participation of all relevant stakeholders in product development
    • Customer spec review of relevant content in support of Sales Proposals and Applications Process.
    • Attend meetings for the Mechanical team
    • Provide broad technical expertise across all company products as relates to their mechanical makeup, design, or fabrication techniques
    • Assure that sound mechanical engineering fundamentals are satisfied in design development that matches proper dynamic and static requirements with selected physical architecture and component/material selection. Includes DFMA considerations in all final design execution to facilitate ease of manufacture and assembly
    • Lead the compiling and analyzing of operational, test, and research data to establish performance standards for newly designed or modified equipment or products
    • Review product design for compliance with engineering principles, applicable regulations, company standards, and customer contract requirements, and related specifications
    • Competently use SolidWorks and AutoCAD software to create product designs and component details.
    • Report on and/or present progress and status of projects and assignments in various formats
    • Perform value analysis and product improvement to enhance manufacturability, productivity, reliability, safety, quality, and cost effectiveness
    • Maintain relationships with vendors and be able to report on changes to their product offerings and their developing technologies
    • Domestic travel as required to customer sites and/or to attend trade events; travel is expected to be less than 10% in any given year.
    • Other duties may be assigned by management
  • Lead the development and maintaining of engineering standards for the mechanical engineering group and company products overall
YOUR WORKPLACE
Though you may find opportunities to attend trade shows and external training, this job will not require regular travel. This position allows the opportunity to transition to a 4-day work week or a hybrid Work-From-Home/Work-From-Office schedule as part of our flexible work environment.
While performing your duties, you will need to go back and forth between your own workspace and Omega's Production floor where your ideas are assembled, tested, and validated. Omega's culture takes safety very seriously. We regularly provide safety training, while assessing and mitigating potential risks of moving objects, lasers, robotics, electrical panels, and other considerations.
THE TEAM
Our Engineering department occupies a quiet section of the building with easy access to Production and Omega's rapid prototyping lab. The team is comprised of engineers with varying backgrounds and specialties including mechanical, electrical, controls automation, and robotics. You will report directly to the Manufacturing Manager, though you can expect to interact frequently with employees at all levels and departments of the company. Additionally, you will build bonds with various vendors and distributors to specify commercial components or fabrication details with minimal assistance.

Experience and Skills
YOUR REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESS
A positive attitude, an eagerness to learn, and the ability to work with all levels of the company are some things that define our roadmap to success.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 10+ years of experience with a track record for taking on more responsibility and developing your skill set
  • Openness to collaboration in all scenarios - you bring good ideas to the table, but can also recognize them from others
  • Proven track record in machine design, CAD modeling and drafting, and engineering documentation,
  • Experience with the design of systems that include considerations for pneumatics, AC and servo motion and transmission, position sensors, and fail-safe operation
  • Familiarity with GD&T, fabrication processes, jigs and tooling, and assembly methods
  • Can deliver cost-effective and timely designs and drawings that meet schedules, budgets, internal standards, and customer specifications.
  • Can review designs for compliance with engineering principles, regulations, internal standards, and contract requirements.
  • Motivated to improve both yourself and those around you
  • Self-sufficient at solving engineering problems and able to delegate and grow others
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills needed to report status and prioritization for multiple projects
Nice to have:
  • Familiarity with file management software, such as Adept or PDM
  • Familiarity with automation machinery such as but not limited to bottle unscramblers, desiccant feeders, serialization standards, stretch banders, and shrink bundlers
  • Experience with change-control practices
  • Experience in the packaging industry
  • Prior experience in a Lead or Senior Engineer role, desired
