* Inspect, measure, and test samples for mechanical testing in accordance with work instructions and/operating procedures. Mechanical Testing includes:
o Tensile testing of routine samples
* Round tensile specimens
* Flat tensile specimens
* Full thickness plate or tube specimens
o Impact Testing
* Impact resistance
* Lateral Expansion
* Percent shear
* Room and sub-temperature testing
o Hardness
* Brinell
* Rockwell
* Knoop
* Vickers
o Specialty mechanical testing
* Compression testing
* Proof load testing
* Chalmers testing
* Wire testing
* Braze peel testing
* Measurement of R & N values
* Spring testing
* Product durability testing
* Strain gaging
* Thermal evaluations using thermocouples
* Sensor data acquisition
* Communicate with customers to determine mechanical testing requirements
* Determine all necessary customer requirements and testing parameters including required fixturing, loading, and results
* Interpret and comprehend specifications and engineering drawings.
* Develop the technical aspects of a quote working with the Sales and Accounts team.
* Engineer, design, develop, and build custom test fixtures with the assistance of the machine shop to meet unique customer test requirements.
* Develop mechanical test methods using the tensile testing software (Instron Bluehill, Tinius Olsen Horizon, etc.).
o Write test programs to meet customer required test loading, speed, and other parameters.
o Troubleshoot test programs when data generated requires further clarification.
* Perform required testing and evaluate the results for accuracy, practicality, pragmatism to known industry values
* Write clear and concise technical reports for customers summarizing the testing process and results.
* Technically review reports generated by coworkers for accuracy and completeness of the customers' initial request.
* Discuss and answer technical questions related to tests result interpretation and processes with customers during and after testing to assist with understanding and clarity
* Maintain clean and organized work area.
* Perform preventative maintenance tasks as required for each machine that an employee operates.
* Coordinate equipment calibration.
* Accurately complete required quality/inspection documentation.
* Participate in improvements to processes, procedures, and work areas.
* Notify supervisor regarding problems/concerns affecting performance of responsibilities.
* Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or management.
Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:
* Ability to use various types of measuring equipment such as but not limited to: micrometers, calipers, extensometers, and data acquisition unit.
* Working knowledge of applicable ASTM, ISO, specifications.
* Basic computer skills: proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and other similar programs.
* Perform established work instructions and/other operating instructions.
* Perform daily preventative maintenance and inspection of equipment.
* Contribute to team problem-solving efforts.
* Communicate with a supervisor regarding any issues related to the equipment, policies and procedures and any other issues which may affect job performance.
* Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
* Identify various problem situations and refer problems to the appropriate individual (or manager) for decision-making.
* Strong verbal communication skills to exchange information with others clearly and concisely. Ability to present ideas, facts, and technical information.
* Work with a wide range of personalities in a courteous, effective, and efficient manner, representing Anderson Laboratories in a professional manner.
* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a supervisor, employees, and customers
Supervisory Responsibilities:
* This position directly supervises the Laboratory Analysts - Mechanical Testing positions.
Education and/or Experience:
* Bachelor's degree or higher in a mechanical engineering related discipline or four years of related technical experience, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and demonstrated skill.
Language Skills:
* Ability to read, speak, and write English.
* Read, interpret, and understand technical procedures and specifications.
* Write reports; and effectively communicate test results, procedures, questions from clients, inspectors, and laboratory personnel.
Working Conditions:
* Work is performed primarily in a laboratory environment.
* The occasional need for off-site testing in foundries, manufacturing facilities, or similar environments may be required.
Physical Requirements:
* Requires tolerance of standing and sitting for extended periods of time, intermittent walking.
* Frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Occasionally lift or move objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
Protective Equipment Required:
* Safety glasses with solid side shields and steel toe boots when working in the Mechanical Lab.
