Position Highlights:
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: ASCP, AMT, or ASPT. CPR certification. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Adheres to the general Medical Center standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building. 2. Assures accurate and timely collection of blood specimens, according to departmental practices. 3. Assures accurate identification and delivery of patient samples to appropriate lab sections. 4. Follows proper safety and identification procedures when dealing with patients and/or specimens under any circumstance or environment. 5. Improves work skills through self-study and continuing education. 6. Contributes to the smooth and efficient operation of the section and department. 7. Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approval policies and procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne and/or airborne diseases. 8. Exhibits and promotes the professional image of laboratories in accordance with hospital, department, and professional society philosophies, goals and standards of laboratory testing. 9. Provides age appropriate specimen collection in accordance with age specific guidelines for neonate, school age, adolescents, early adults, middle adults and/or late adults. 10. Monitors expirations dates of supplies and notifies manager of any supplies, which are within 30 days of expiration. Immediately removes all expired supplies from stock room, carts, and any other areas supplies are housed. 11. Responsible for the cleanliness and organization of phlebotomy carts, outpatient draw room, phlebotomy stockroom, and any other areas utilized by phlebotomy. 12. May be asked to train new hires or phlebotomy students who will come to our hospital to complete their clinical rotations. 13. Expected to be knowledgeable in hospital outpatient collection process. This includes being proficient in identifying orders in LIS, entering orders, printing labels, calling provider offices with any questions or issues, collecting and labeling specimens according to departmental policies and procedures. 14. May require working to cover needs of any shift in a 24-hour period, 7 days/week, including holidays and possibly taking call.
