JOB SUMMARY : This position is responsible for repairing and maintaining a variety of city vehicles and equipment.

- Troubleshoots maintenance problems using diagnostic tools.
- Performs engine, exhaust, electrical, brake and hydraulic repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Conducts scheduled preventive maintenance functions including checking the condition and operation of batteries, tires, lights, transmissions, exhaust systems and brakes.
- Performs corrective maintenance procedures on heavy equipment, including hydraulic, electrical and various degrees of engine repair.
- Performs vehicle and equipment maintenance procedures such as tune-ups, oil and filter changes, heating and air conditioning repair.
- Responds to emergency call backs.
- Performs a variety of engine diagnostic procedures.
- Performs emergency repairs on vehicles as necessary; troubleshoots equipment failures at job sites.
- Welds and fabricates parts.
- Maintains the shop and assigned tools; performs housekeeping duties.
- Responds to emergency call backs on an as-need basis. Serves on-call for snow-ice operations.

- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair of automotive and heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of troubleshooting procedures.
- Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance procedures for a variety of gasoline and diesel powered equipment.
- Knowledge of the operating principles and mechanical repair of engines.
- Skill in diagnosing complex defects in automotive and heavy equipment and in performing appropriate repairs.
- Skill in reading schematic drawings.
- Skill in repairing vehicles and equipment using the necessary tools including computer and electrical diagnostic equipment.
- Skill in welding and fabricating parts.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Missouri for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Missouri Class B CDL with airbrake and tank endorsements or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Missouri Inspector Mechanic License or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
