Camp Linwood McDonald YMCA (a branch of the YMCA of Newark & Vicinity) is seeking a Cook to provide nutritious meals and exemplary customer service for the clients at the camp in accordance with the policies and procedures. Under the general direction of the Camp Executive Director and the guidance, leadership and supervision of the Food Service Manager, the Cook will be responsible for assisting in the planning, cooking and function of the kitchen and meal services. All staff will be required to model the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in their work each day. The YMCA's recruitment process includes comprehensive background check including pre-employment drug test and criminal background check.
Summary of the Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide nutritious meals and exemplary customer service for the clients at the camp.
  • Assist in developing cost effective and creative menus.
  • Prepare meals in accordance with the menu.
  • Act as a resource and provide leadership to all Kitchen Assistants.
  • Stock and keep track of all inventories and safely store food away from dust, cleaning supplies, etc.
  • Ensure awareness and compliance of Policies and Procedures.
  • Attend various trainings to provide excellent work practices and quality of food.
  • Ensure the kitchen and food supply areas are maintained above the expectations of local, county and state health boards.
  • Recommend equipment and supplies for order to the Food Services Manager or Camp Executive Director.
  • Provide a safe and sanitary workplace for all staff.
  • Ensure all meals are served on time and at the appropriate temperature.
Minimum Requirement:
  • Minimum of three years of experience in food services industry.
  • Knowledge of current health and safety laws and practices.
  • Knowledge of standards of food preparation and serving, storage of food, and kitchen procedures.
  • Knowledge of food service sanitation.
  • Knowledge of and experience in preparation of special dietary foods including vegetarian food.
  • Excellent Customer Service skills and ability to demonstrate enthusiasm and continually serve with a friendly attitude.
  • Prior experience in organized conference or institutionalized food service is desired.
  • SafeServe certification desired / or ability to obtain within one month of employment.
  • Certification in First Aid is desired.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Flexible schedule is required.
Physical Demand: Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions in a wide variety of outdoor and indoor locations.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds including unloading food, supplies, and equipment as needed.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards of the site and facilities and camper and staff behavior.
  • Physical ability to operate kitchen equipment according to safe, recommended methods.
  • Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing/walking for long periods of time (60 minutes or more).
  • Ability to provide first aid and to assist campers and staff in an emergency.
  • Ability to determine cleanliness of dishes, food surfaces, and kitchen area.
  • Ability to assess condition of food.
Work schedule : Mid April - October 2023. Days and Times vary depending on the groups.
