Description
Performs standard microbiological examinations of water samples in a laboratory, assists with more complex investigations and analyses, and with assigned phases of research projects; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the entry level class in the Water Microbiology series. This class differs from the Water Microbiologist II in that the Water Microbiologist I primarily performs microbiological examinations of water in accordance with standard methods and techniques, whereas the Water Microbiologist II performs a variety of standard and special microbiological examinations of water, requiring judgment in selection of methods and techniques.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in bacteriology, biology or a related field.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3).
Knowledge of: the principles of bacteriology and biology; laboratory practices, procedures and techniques; the uses and care of scientific instruments and laboratory apparatus and equipment; practices and procedures utilized in collecting field samples, and in recording, assembling and compiling scientific observations and statistical data.
Ability to: conduct standard microbiological examinations; make field tests and laboratory preparations and computations; assist in the performance of research work; keep records and prepare reports of laboratory procedures, observations and results of tests; understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Health and Physical Condition:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.

- Collects water samples for bacteriologic and biologic analyses.
- Conducts chlorine residual tests.
- Performs bacteriologic examinations of water including the presumptive, confirmed, completed and differential tests.
- Performs or assists with biologic examinations of water to gauge water quality in terms of water, turbidity, odor, taste and other factors affecting its suitability for intended use.
- Assists in assigned phases of microbiologic research.
- Assists in the maintenance of laboratory apparatus and equipment.
- Prepares culture media, stains, reagents and stock solutions.
- Conducts house to house surveys and investigates consumer complaints regarding water quality.
- Keeps records and prepares reports.
