Battery Mechanic is responsible for the total maintenance of lead acid industrial batteries for all forklift, order picker, reach truck and pallet mover batteries. This includes changing batteries, filling them with water, cleaning acid from the exterior of the batteries and performing a complete battery cleaning each month. Other duties include keeping the battery storage racking clean of acid residue, making sure the battery chargers are working properly and notify electricians of any needed repair, maintain the power battery chargers in top operating condition as well as testing and repairing all lead acid industrial batteries.
- Responsibilities for periodic condition-based maintenance inspections.
- Carries out or coordinates preventative maintenance to equipment.
- Helps other mechanics with the tasks and learning new equipment and job tasks.
- Change batteries in all plant forklifts.
- Change batteries in all plant reach trucks.
- Inspect and clean forklift order picker and reach truck lead acid batteries.
- Add water to all batteries as needed.
- Clean batteries on an on-going basis.
- Maintain battery washer, including proper PH levels in units.
- Keep battery racks clean of acid build up.
- Keep area around battery chargers clean.
- Inspect eye wash station weekly.
- Keep steam pad area clean.
- Test batteries for proper voltage and specific gravity.
- Inspect and maintain battery changer daily.
- Replace battery cables and ends as necessary.
- Rebuild (replace battery cells) as necessary.
- High School education or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 6 months of experience is necessary in order to make dependable and safe repairs to keep machinery operational.
- A mechanical aptitude along with experience with all hand tools is required.
- Forklift License and valid Oregon Drivers License
- Able to manage multiple tasks while making professional decisions to reduce downtime while keeping safety as the highest priority.
- Able to lift to 50lbs consistently and 50+lbs on occasion.
- Able to stand, walk for extended periods (8 hours +) and stoop, kneel, crawl and climb.
- Able to work in heights of 30+ feet and in cold storage (0 to 40 degrees) for extended periods of time (8 hours).
