Provide complete project management including procurement, assembly, start-up and qualification of tooling and products for the manufacturing plant. Participate with project teams from NPD (New Product Development) in development of tooling to optimize new product cost and manufacturing, and with manufacturing teams to resolve current issues with new and current tooling.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform plant thermoform production tool engineering and design for NPD and manufacturing support projects.
  • Contribute technical expertise as team member of both manufacturing and NPD support projects.
  • Perform engineering calculations and design as required to ensure high level of tool performance:
    • High throughput tooling with adequate cooling and air flow;
    • High quality manufacture of products;
    • Wide "process window" to ensure ease of operation.
  • Perform design of both Form and Trim tooling, including complete mold and design, and conversion sets consisting of cavities, assist plugs, trim tooling, perforation tooling.
  • Perform complete project management when assigned projects, including:
  • Work with project team directed by Project Manager;
    • Tooling concept and design review
    • Schedule and budget control
    • High quality tool fabrication meeting full design specification
    • Complete follow-up of initial trial and tooling qualification;
    • Implement scorecard to audit project success.
  • Work with plant tool personnel, quality, tool engineering, and manufacturing to maintain and continually improve tooling standards with known performance.
  • Participate in design evaluation of new as well as current products, to improve manufacturability and success during trials and qualification of production tooling at the plant.
  • Analyze details of manufacturing issues to develop better standards of design, as well as correct current manufacturing problems.
  • Establish technical competence and knowledge of process and support equipment. Contribute to creative manufacturing solutions involving production lines, machinery and infrastructure.
  • Prepare Capital Authorization Request (CAR) when required with effective project explanation, justification, project timeline and ROI calculation. Prepare detailed presentation of CAR to management for approval.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Experience-
  • 5 years experience in tool design, thermoforming preferred.
  • Skilled in 3D Solid Modeling CAD software, Solid Works preferred.
  • Experience in manufacturing (plastics mfg. preferred), tool making or machine shop.
  • Strong problem solving skills with good mechanical aptitude.
  • Knowledge of current compliance requirements for Safety.
  • Experience with Continuous Improvement and Lean Manufacturing methods a plus.
  • Capable of effective communication and team building to enhance project coordination.
  • Demonstrated use of effective documentation for schedule and budget management
