ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a Welding Engineer to join our team supporting the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) at Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory ! This position is full-time and will be based out of West Mifflin, PA., with 35% remote work.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, test, evaluate, and eventually qualify repair procedures in the laboratory and consult with various fabrication vendors and shipyards.
  • Support repair operations which may be supported include:
    • gas tungsten arc welding,
    • gas metal arc welding,
    • shielded metal arc welding,
    • epoxies/composites, and
    • mechanical/machining processes.
  • Plan, follow, and execute work efforts.
  • Conceive and produce technical instructions and procedures.
  • Track procurement actions / budget performance.
  • Write technical submittals and recommendations.
  • Contribute to the development of novel repair techniques, by drafting, placing, following and reporting subcontracted repair method development/demonstration contracts.
  • Travel to vendors and shipyards to support project planning, equipment testing and repair deployment.
Requirements
  • Education & Years of Experience - Bachelor's Degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university and 10+ years of relevant experience OR Master's Degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Citizenship - To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.
  • Clearance - To be considered, you must be able to obtain a DOE "L" or DoD "Secret" clearance for this position; early start is available while obtaining the required clearance.
  • Must have experience making technical presentations.
  • Must have the ability to lead/execute laboratory operations in a productive, timely, and compliant manner.
  • Must have the ability to develop and interpret specifications, drawings, and engineering standards.
  • Must be able to plan and execute work programs, design experiments, analyze experimental results, and prepare technical reports.
Desired Skills
  • Experience with automated/mechanized gas tungsten arc welding experience.
  • Demonstrated acumen in executing laboratory work are preferred.
  • Familiarity with inspection methods is a plus.
  • Excellent individual initiative and creativity will enhance the successful candidate's value in this position.
About the Site
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is comprised of the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, located in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory located in Niskayuna, New York, the Kesselring Site, located in West Milton, New York, and the Naval Reactor Facility located in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Together, they develop advanced technology for the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, ensure the safety and reliability of naval nuclear reactors, and train Sailors who operate reactors in submarines and aircraft carrier fleets (energy.gov).
