Job Title: Control Engineer (ABB Automation)
Location: Hampstead, MD or Baltimore, MD
Compensation: $90,000-$120,000 (Negotiable)
Travel: Up to 30-40% (Primarily to customer sites in the Mid-Atlantic region)

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Control Engineer with a strong background in ABB automation platforms to support the design, programming, and deployment of advanced industrial control systems. You'll play a key role in bringing smart automation to life for our municipal and industrial clients-primarily in the Baltimore area-while enjoying the flexibility to work both from our Hampstead or Baltimore office and in the field.
Responsibilities:
- Design, program, and integrate control systems using ABB PLCs (e.g., AC500 series) and ABB HMIs.
- Configure and troubleshoot ABB variable frequency drives (VFDs) and motion control systems.
- Develop electrical schematics and panel layouts using AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN.
- Collaborate directly with customers to understand system requirements and deliver custom automation solutions.
- Write and implement code using ABB Automation Builder and related tools.
- Perform onsite commissioning, including I/O checks and end-user training.
- Integrate communication protocols such as Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and Profibus.
- Create technical documentation: functional specs, I/O lists, manuals, etc.
- Ensure systems meet applicable standards (e.g., UL 508A, NFPA 70E, CE).
- Provide remote and on-site support for troubleshooting, upgrades, and ongoing system enhancements.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with ABB automation platforms, including PLCs, drives, and HMIs.
- Proficiency with ABB software tools (e.g., Automation Builder, Drive Composer, Panel Builder).
- Strong knowledge of industrial control systems, from design to commissioning.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 30-40%, primarily throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
Preferred:
- Experience with other control platforms such as Rockwell, Siemens, or Schneider.
- Familiarity with ABB safety systems and functional safety design.
- Industry experience in water/wastewater (ideal), food/beverage, pharmaceuticals, or discrete manufacturing.
- Knowledge of UL 508A standards and control panel design best practices.
- Self-starter with strong project management and cross-functional communication skills.
