Description
Performs a variety of activities associated with the collection, accession and process of laboratory specimens for analysis, evaluation and/or diagnostic purposes
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (include, but not limited to the following)
  • Collects blood specimens as ordered by venipuncture and capillary puncture in accordance with all safety and infection control procedures
  • Greets patients and provides instructions to patients and patient's family on proper specimen collection and aftercare
  • Prepares and affixes labels to specimen vials to ensure proper identification
  • Provides specimen collection material to patient; reviews and oversees proper urine collection methods with patient and/or patient family to minimize opportunity for contamination
  • Maintains accurate records, files and logs of collection and processing activities
  • Records, files and distributes reference lab reports
  • Performs a variety of basic diagnostic tests using centrifuge and blood collection equipment as directed and supervised in accordance with CLIA regulations
  • Inventories and requisitions medical laboratory supplies and stocks work area as need
  • Participates in departmental orientation, on the job training and quality assurance programs/initiatives
  • Participates in a variety of department and hospital educational programs to maintain current skill and competency levels; identifies and discusses performance or training needs with Supervisor
  • May be requested to perform other related activities and duties as needed
  • May perform routine instrument and equipment cleaning
Requirements
  • One year of previous phlebotomy experience
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Certification by the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), preferred
