We are searching for a Mechanical Engineering Support Specialist to join our Materials and Mechanicals Development Department in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. ARL/Penn State's purpose is to develop innovative solutions to challenging national problems in support of the Navy, DoD, and Intel communities' engineering and technology needs.

We are searching for a Mechanical Engineering Support Specialist to join our Materials and Mechanicals Development Department in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. You will:
- Oversee all day to day aspects of testing in the DTC/Gear Research Institute test facility and
- Report test progress to the principal investigators and other engineering personnel and
- Collaborate with principal investigators daily
- Perform inspections of test articles and document results
- Design and implement program specific test stand hardware changes
- Generate designs and manufacturing drawings for new test specimens and machine parts
- Field technical questions from vendors as they produce components to ensure parts are made correctly
- Assist with design and construction of new test equipment
- Troubleshoot malfunctioning test equipment both mechanical and electrical
- Install and use instrumentation such as strain gages, thermocouples, accelerometers, etc.
- Responsible for day to day procurement of lab supplies
- Supervise interns
Higher level responsibilities include:
- Work with engineers to plan, design, and assemble new test equipment
- Assign tasking for lower level support staff
- Provide input for preventive maintenance and test planning schedules
- May evaluate, implement and test new gear performance evaluation procedures
- Proficiency in 3D modeling software (Solidworks, Inventor, or similar CAD package)
- Working knowledge of GD&T (geometric product specifications)
- Working knowledge of metalworking/machining techniques
- Assembly of mechanical systems, test and maintenance of mechanical systems
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- The ability to work independently as well as in teams
- Assembly, operation and troubleshooting of mechanical systems, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems
- Knowledge of gear theory, gear terminology, gear manufacturing techniques, gear failure mechanisms, etc.
