Principal Duties/Responsibilities
- Serve as subject matter expert (SME) for electrical/electronic components of Navy rudder control systems, steering control panels, and integrated control systems.
- Provide technical direction and support for steering control PLCs, motor controllers, servo amplifiers, encoders, and feedback devices.
- Conduct troubleshooting and fault isolation for steering electrical circuits and signal processing paths during maintenance or casualty events.
- Interface with Ship Control System (SCS) and support control system integration across propulsion and navigation networks.
- Lead shipboard test events, including loop checks, power checks, signal validation, and control logic verification.
- Collaborate with OEMs and Navy technical codes (e.g., NSWCPD) to develop solutions for obsolescence, reliability, or control system upgrades.
- Develop test procedures, electrical diagrams, and update system documentation including wiring diagrams, system interface drawings, and control logic summaries.
- Author and review Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs), Technical Feedback Reports (TFBRs), and Control System Configuration Baselines.
- Support shipboard installation and commissioning efforts, including SHIPALTs and Fleet Modernization initiatives.
- Provide distance support and on-site assistance through Navy ILS tools such as Remedy, Navy 311, and other fleet support.
- Analyze operational and test data to identify trends, support troubleshooting, and inform recommendations for system improvements.
- Experience with shipboard electrical control systems (preferably Navy steering, propulsion, or auxiliary control systems).
- Strong understanding of marine electrical systems, including 440V/115V/24VDC systems, breakers, relays, sensors, and system grounding.
- Travel up to 30%
- Familiarity with ladder logic, control system schematics, HMI/PLC systems, and shipboard data buses (e.g., CAN, Ethernet, RS-485).
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex control issues under real-world shipboard conditions.
- Must be able to climb shipboard ladders and operate in confined or elevated environments aboard Navy vessels.
- U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a Secret-level clearance
The ideal candidate will have working knowledge or practical familiarity with the following systems and support responsibilities related to:
- Experience with surface ship steering systems, electric valve actuators, or integrated machinery control systems.
- Knowledge of NAVSEA engineering practices and Class Maintenance Plans (CMP) processes
- Familiarity with shipboard safety systems, kill switches, emergency override controls, and feedback calibration.
- Knowledge of fleet modernization, SHIPALTs, and related configuration management processes.
- Familiarity with Integrated Bridge Systems (IBS) or other helm control systems.
- Prior experience with in-service engineering support (ISEA) or NAVSEA/NSWCPD technical codes.
- Exposure to DoN shipboard testing and safety protocols.
