Public Safety Communications Officer

Public Safety Communications Officer is responsible for operation of the Police Department Communications Center. The communications officer coordinates all calls received for police service and prioritizes said calls as to the nature and level of emergency. Communications Officer relays information to MHS Police Officers on duty and coordinates emergency responses from a centralized location. Job Requirements: High School or GED Applicant must pass criminal background check as required to attain Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Basic Telecommunication certification. Ability to attain Basic Telecommunication Certification from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement within one year of employment and maintain certification throughout the course of employment. Ability to attain NCIC/TCIC certification within one year of employment and maintain certification throughout the course of employment (when system is brought online). Job Responsibilities: Receives telephone calls or radio calls for police service in reference to reports or complaints and determines the proper police personnel to be assigned to the call or makes referral to the proper department. Collects information from the caller such as name, location, level of emergency, and suspect descriptions etc. Records all information related to said calls in department logging system. Dispatches police personnel to emergency situations, to take reports and to meet complaints via radio ensuring all information collected from the caller is provided. Conducts computer searches through local, state, and national files for wanted persons or stolen property and provides this information to the requesting police personnel. Compile and enter data for various daily reports into the computer system and record information on logs maintained by the Police Department. Document problems with dispatch center equipment to ensure equipment is in working order at all times. Report all equipment problems immediately to the appropriate supervisor. Maintains status of on duty police personnel as well as the departments' investigative division. Monitors local news and weather reports. Remains calm in high stress situations, able to control emotions to effectively handle difficult or unreasonable persons. Must effectively and tactfully interact with the public, co-workers, and supervisors professionally. Must be able to read and understand oral, written, or technical information to answer questions and solve practical problems.
