The

Personal Care Assistant (Caregiver)

provides various personal care and related paraprofessional services in accordance with an established plan of care. This role focuses on assisting clients in their homes, ensuring their comfort and well-being.

Essential Responsibilities Follow agency policies and procedures. Work under the supervision of a designated supervisor. Assist clients with activities of daily living, including: Personal hygiene (bathing, grooming, oral care, skin care) Ambulation and mobility support Meal preparation and feeding assistance Dressing and grooming Toileting and incontinence care Perform additional tasks as directed by a nurse for specific clients, such as: Assisting with ostomy appliance changes Reinforcing non-sterile dressings Helping with mobility aids (canes, walkers, wheelchairs, lifts) Assisting with prescribed range-of-motion exercises Measuring and preparing special diets Monitoring intake and output Taking vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure) Assisting with external catheter application Helping with the application of arm or leg splints

Tasks Not Performed by Personal Care Assistants Personal Care Assistants

are not

permitted to perform the following: Sterile dressing changes Catheterization or wound irrigation Medication administration (including oral medications, eye drops, or medicated ointments) IV or parenteral medication administration Tracheotomy care or suctioning Tube feedings (nasogastric or gastrostomy) Nail care for clients with diabetes or circulatory issues Any personal health service not included in the approved task list Housekeeping Responsibilities Personal Care Assistants may assist with light housekeeping to support the client’s self-care, including: Vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, and mopping Washing dishes and doing laundry Cleaning bathrooms and other living areas Tasks Not Performed by Personal Care Assistants Heavy-duty cleaning (washing walls, waxing floors, deep cleaning) Home repairs or maintenance Yard work or outdoor maintenance Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred At least six months of experience as a Personal Care Assistant in a healthcare setting (home or facility) Completion of a state-approved Nurse Aide or Personal Care Assistant course Strong interpersonal skills Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English Work Environment & Availability Work primarily takes place in the client’s home; travel may be required.
