Full time, part time and per diem positions available UMass Memorial Health Entities: Medical Center - Worcester (University, Memorial, Hahnemann) Health Alliance -Clinton (Leominster) Marlboro Hospital Harrington Hospital (Southbridge, Webster) Community Healthlink - Worcester Community Medical Group (Doctor Offices) I. Major Responsibilities: 1. Checks supplies, and equipment needed for surgical procedure.2. Using the principles of asepsis, prepares instruments, supplies and sutures for the surgical procedure3. Assists in properly positioning patient4. Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment and medications/solutions needed for procedure.5. Provides appropriate instrumentation and supplies to surgeon during procedures.6. Performs appropriate counts with nurse according to policy.7. Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants8. Helps in draping sterile field9. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.10. Prepares sterile dressings11. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization12. Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of the room13. Assists in prepping room for the next patient.14. Cleans and restocks the operating room according to departmental protocols15. Washes and assembles instruments and supplies according to departmental protocols16. Assembles and checks instrument and equipment functionality prior to procedure; follows up on repairs and replacements of instruments as requested.17. Completes review of physician preference lists ensuring communication and validation of correct supplies and instruments for surgical procedure.18. Evaluate the safe implementation of electrical equipment ensuring patient safety; follows all policy and procedures addressing patient safety.19. Handles and processes pathology specimens, cultures, drugs and other items on the sterile field.20. Keeps accurate counts of medications and irrigating solutions used during the surgical procedure.21. Maintains patient confidentiality.22. Transports patients to and from the operating Room.23. Precepts new orientees and students in Surgical Technologist program.24. As a certified surgical technologist, performs the role of second assisting to the surgeon and/or to the first assistant during the operative procedure by carrying out technical tasks other than cutting, clamping and suturing of tissue. Duties include but are not exclusive to the following:25. Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon26. Sponges or suctions operative site27. Applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders28. Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon29. Connects drains to suction apparatus30. Applies dressings to closed wound

II. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education:

Required:1. BLS Certification2. Surgical Technologist certification required3. Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist program Experience/Skills:

Required:1. Well organized and possess high degree of manual dexterity2. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, customer service and communication skills required OR equivalent combination of the above Preferred:1. 3 years experience in a hospital-based surgical service preferred Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents. III.
