This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to one of the following locations: Warren, MI, or Mountain View, CA, at least three times a week. The Ideal Candidate: Connectivity plays a pivotal role in utilizing and advancing technology to offer unparalleled customer experience and develop revenue streams, while serving as a cornerstone for safety-critical, hands-free driving solutions in line with General Motors' strong safety culture. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Hardware Design Engineer to join our team, focused on developing best-in-class automotive connectivity systems. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in system architecture, schematic design, and multi-layer PCB layout, especially for systems involving high-performance computing and wireless interfaces. The Role: The
Staff Hardware Design Engineer
will be responsible for schematic design, PCB layout, function/performance validation, and issue resolution of hardware components and systems supporting Connectivity technologies across all GM vehicles and architectures. This role involves close collaboration with vehicle integration, product managers, and system engineers to create secure and reliable Connectivity solutions and to help define future technology roadmaps and resolve issues during development and production. What You’ll Do: Create and manage schematics, PCB layouts, and BOMs to ensure reliable and high-performance hardware designs. Design and develop complex multi-layer PCB layouts for high-density designs, focusing on signal integrity, power integrity, and thermal management. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define design specifications aligned with system requirements. Perform signal and power integrity analysis, including grounding, trace routing, and impedance control. Work with external manufacturers to optimize designs for fabrication, assembly, and cost efficiency. Develop test strategies and validation methods to ensure hardware design reliability and performance. Manage design revisions and continuously improve existing designs. Provide technical support during prototypes and troubleshoot design-related issues. Ensure compliance with industry standards, including safety and regulatory requirements. Support component selection and guide Contract Manufacturers throughout development. Report project status, roadblocks, and escalate issues to senior leadership. Additional Job Description Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications): Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field 10+ years of experience in hardware design and testing, especially in complex embedded and connectivity systems Expertise in high-performance computer system design, including architecture, high-speed digital interfaces (PCIe, USB, Ethernet), and power supply design Experience with audio interface integration (I2S, digital codecs) Proficiency in PCB design tools such as Mentor Graphics, Altium, Eagle, or KiCad Hands-on experience with hardware debugging tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and signal generators Solid knowledge of embedded systems and processor architectures (ARM-based systems, etc.) Familiarity with wireless protocols (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, BLE, NFC, UWB) and best practices for coexistence and mitigation Excellent problem-solving skills for hardware and system issues Strong communication and teamwork skills for cross-disciplinary collaboration Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree Knowledge and experience in wireless interfaces and technology #LI-SW1 The compensation range for this role in the California Bay Area is $168,000 - $258,800, based on experience and other factors.
