Applied Medical is seeking a
Manager, Server & Virtualization Platforms
to lead the strategy, engineering, and lifecycle management of our global server infrastructure. This leadership role is critical to the reliability and scalability of the platforms supporting all major systems across the organization.
As part of the Enterprise Platforms & Services (EPS) team, you will manage a team of skilled engineers, drive modernization initiatives, and ensure the consistent delivery of secure, resilient, and high-performing infrastructure. This hands-on leadership role requires technical depth, strong collaboration, and the ability to influence and execute at scale.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Development
Lead and grow a high-performing platform engineering team focused on Windows, Linux, and macOS server infrastructure. Foster a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and mentorship aligned with our core values. Translate strategic goals into tactical execution and implement an effective operating model for team resilience.
Server & Virtualization Platforms
Own the strategy and architecture for virtualization (VMware, Nutanix AHV) and containerized platforms (Docker, Kubernetes). Drive modernization efforts, including the shift to microservices and container orchestration. Establish platform governance, standard documentation, and design consistency.
Platform Lifecycle & Operations
Ensure OS provisioning, patching, and compliance meet performance, security, and regulatory standards. Define and manage lifecycle policies, incorporating DR, backup, and observability practices. Collaborate across teams to deliver scalable, secure, and highly available infrastructure solutions.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with application, security, and product teams to align infrastructure strategies with business priorities. Maintain service reliability targets (e.g., 99.9% uptime) for mission-critical systems. Communicate progress, priorities, and impacts to stakeholders at all levels.
Performance Objectives:
First 30 Days:
Build foundational relationships with global infrastructure, platform, and application teams. Review compute platform health, lifecycle posture, and active project portfolio. Begin developing a modernization roadmap that aligns with uptime goals and strategic growth plans.
Next 60 Days:
Define baseline KPIs for performance, uptime, and lifecycle coverage. Align server operations with backup, DR, and storage governance policies. Begin sunsetting legacy systems and deploying automation to reduce toil.
By Day 90:
Finalize server modernization roadmap. Build and begin executing on a 12-month strategic plan. Present strategy and progress updates to senior leadership.
Position Requirements
Seven or more years of experience in systems engineering or infrastructure, including three or more years of people management or technical leadership. Demonstrated ability to lead transformation initiatives while mentoring and scaling high-performing technical teams. Passion for growing people and inspiring a culture of excellence. Ability to lead cross-functional collaboration and instill and uphold company culture. Strategic mindset with a passion for resilient, reliable systems. While this is a leadership role, candidates should feel comfortable diving into technical discussions and architecture reviews when needed.
Preferred
Strong expertise in Windows server platforms, with supporting experience in Linux and macOS environments. Proven experience with virtualization technologies (VMware, Nutanix AHV) and containerized platforms (Docker, Kubernetes). Strong knowledge of modern systems architectures and design principles. Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Ansible) and hybrid cloud integrations.
Benefits
Competitive compensation range: $100,000 - $150,000 / year (California). Comprehensive benefits package. Training and mentorship opportunities. On-campus wellness activities. Education reimbursement program. 401(k) program with discretionary employer match. Generous vacation accrual and paid holiday schedule.
Please note that the compensation range may be adjusted in the future, and bonus and incentive compensation plans may apply.
Our total reward package reflects our commitment to employee growth and well-being, as we invest in your development and offer a range of benefits designed to enhance your career and life.
All compensation and benefits are subject to plan documents and written agreements.
