Your Mission
We are searching for a Senior System Administrator with expertise in VMware to support a significant enterprise IT contract for the Department of Defense (DoD).
This technical role involves providing advanced VMware administration, guiding other systems administrators in best practices for configuration. This detail-oriented individual will capture customer inquiries accurately and collaborate with other administrators to address service requests and issues. You will analyze complex customer problems, suggest actionable solutions, and implement corrective measures to ensure optimal service. Additionally, the role requires you to assess existing infrastructure for performance enhancements and tunings. Other duties may include technical software configuration, rebooting, and conducting remedial actions on customer servers.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and oversee VMware virtual environments using vSphere across multiple data centers and networks.
Install and configure VMware vCenter Server along with related management servers.
Set up and configure VMware ESXi hosts.
Troubleshoot existing environments and new deployments on VMware servers.
Monitor the environment actively and respond to alerts and errors.
Document, review, and update system administration guides and procedures systematically.
Configure and address issues related to VMware virtual switches and NSX switches.
Setup and manage vSAN, iSCSI, and NFS datastores.
Assist fellow system administrators in troubleshooting various virtual machines (Windows, RedHat, Ubuntu, etc.) and virtual desktops.
Provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members.
Support operations across geographic locations and networks.
Develop strategic solutions to complex technical challenges, document updated procedures, and implement solutions effectively.
Prepare follow-up reports detailing technical findings, feedback, resolution steps for root cause analysis, and process improvements.
Engage with customers and senior management to address service requests, inquiries, and issues.
Fulfill customer requirements in a 24/7/365 mission-critical environment through after-hours support, planning outages, and scheduling maintenance.
Train and mentor IT Operations Center (ITOC) personnel operating 24/7/365.
Craft and enhance standard operating procedures (SOPs) and monitoring documentation for ITOC personnel.
Successful candidates must possess the following skills:
In-depth experience with VMware vCenter, including installation, configuration, management, troubleshooting, backup/restore, and upgrades (versions 6.0 and newer).
Proficient in managing ESXi hosts, including installation, configuration, security, troubleshooting, and upgrades.
Extensive experience with vSAN for server-side configuration, management, and troubleshooting.
Solid knowledge of NSX virtual networking, including installing virtual switches and configuring VLANs/subnets.
Expertise in datastore management, focusing on iSCSI and NFS.
Experience in setting up automated backups.
Ability to create and manage snapshot policies.
Familiarity with Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) solutions like Dell VXRail.
Experience in performance monitoring, tuning, and optimizing the VMware environment.
Strong troubleshooting skills for VM/VDI errors.
Skills in developing and troubleshooting automation scripts using PowerShell and PowerCLI.
Proficient time management, capable of triaging incidents and responding to mission-critical issues.
Skilled in implementing system patches and upgrades with minimal service disruption.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
A proven track record of effective teamwork and supporting peers to enhance processes and outcomes.
Experience with IT Service Management solutions like Service Now or Remedy.
Security Clearance Requirements
An active TS/SCI clearance with a polygraph is mandatory for this position, or the willingness to obtain and maintain a polygraph is required.
US citizenship is essential due to the nature of the government contracts we support.
Education Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree with 8 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s Degree with 6 years of prior relevant experience, or an Associate’s Degree with 10 years of experience, or 12 years of relevant experience in absence of a degree.
Certifications
Candidates must meet the DoDM 8140.03 (previously DoD 8570) - IT System Admin Intermediate certification requirements (e.g., Cloud+, GICSP, SSCP, Security+ CE, GSEC, or equivalent). Candidates with higher systems administrator certifications like FITSP-O, GFACT, CASP+, CCNP Security, or CCSP are preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
VCP certification is highly favored.
