TYPE OF APPOINTMENT ISSUED:

This position is included in the Educational Officers' Bargaining Unit and will be filled as a limited term temporary appointment. Probationary service credit and tenure are not granted for temporary appointments.

A WRITTEN EXAMINATION/ASSIGNMENT MAY BE ADMINISTERED TO HELP DETERMINE POSSESSION OF THE KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES PORTIONS OF THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS. Under the general supervision of the Educational Specialist III of the Learning Support Team, the Education Specialist II:

1. Plans, designs, develops and monitors the assigned area of statewide Math program for all PreK-12 students; carries out special projects to develop new standards-based instructional programs and courses; assesses the merit and feasibility of alternative instructional approaches, methods, and organization; evaluates and recommends improvements in the current program and services to ensure conformance to established instructional policies and legal or administrative directions.

2. Develops goals, objectives, and long-range plans for standards-based instruction in Math Education for all grades with a focus on literacy, interdisciplinary and applied learning; facilitates/develops resources and approaches that strengthen standards-based learning and innovative practices to promote global citizenship and competence; works collaboratively with other state educational specialists and complex area teams to build capacity and coordinate activities, resources, and implementation of programs to address the Department's strategic plan and priorities.

3. Keeps abreast of current and significant research, nationally recognized core standards, and promising educational activities in PreK-12 Math education to develop, align and/or adopt content and performance standards, curriculum frameworks, resource materials, and standards-based instructional tools that support student achievement; identifies needs, develops and provides resources for state, district, complex area and school teams responsible for providing PreK-12 standards-based learning activities and instruction in Math education to address a well-rounded education and the whole child.

4. Prepares program plans, annual performance reports, budgets, expenditure plans; contracts, memoranda of agreement, legislative testimonies; memos, correspondence in answer to specific questions within areas of responsibility, or other documents as required.

5. Collaborates around tri-level support and provides leadership to district, complex, school and other state office personnel; community and parent groups; and others requesting such services pertaining to the assigned area of Math education.

6. Serves as a liaison between the Department and other State government agencies, community groups, professional organizations, and mainland agencies and organizations in the assigned area of Math education.

7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education :Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in education with specialization in a subject field appropriate to the area(s) of assignment.

Education Equivalence : Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or valid certificate/license in education plus five (5) additional years of relevant experience in a subject field appropriate to the area of assignment.

Experience :Six (6) years of responsible professional work experience in education of which four (4) years shall have been in teaching and two (2) years in curriculum or program planning, as appropriate.

Desired Experience

: Supervisory work experience, implementation and monitoring of programs.

Combined Education and Experience : An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable as determined by the Department. Substitutions can be considered for the requirement of experience in an education program, agency, or system.

Knowledge :Foundations of curriculum and instruction; instructional media and computers; foundations of American education; tests and measurements; principles of learning and individual differences; curriculum design and development; educational statistics; purposes, methods, subject matter and materials pertinent to the area(s) of assignment; research developments, trends and current issues or problems pertinent to the area(s) of assignment; laws, rules, regulations and administrative procedures pertinent to the area(s) of assignment.

Desired Knowledge

: Research on contemporary, innovative instructional models, evidence-based instructional practices for mathematics and experience with implementing action research processes.

Ability to :Provide leadership, planning and coordination in the area(s) of assignment; develop, analyze and evaluate plans, programs and procedures; communicate effectively with others both orally and in writing; operate computer and other business machines; use tools, equipment, instruments or devices appropriate to the area(s) of assignment; maintain awareness of developments in curriculum or program areas.

Desired Ability to

: Develop and implement online resources using appropriate online tools (such as website authoring, Blackboard Collaborate, webinars, and Google Applications); organize/prioritize work and multi-task to maintain an effective work pace under deadlines.

SALARY RANGE:

EOSR-7, $113,660 to $160,893.

Department of Education certificated employees will be placed on the salary range in accordance with Department regulations.

All others will be placed on the first step of $113,660.

WORK YEAR AND BENEFITS:

This appointment will be on a 12-month basis with vacation and sick leave provided according to applicable regulations.
