www.laalliance.org . ROLE SUMMARY We seek an experienced, results-driven, and equity-minded Chief Scholar Achievement Officer (CSAO) to join our executive leadership team. Reporting to the CEO, the CSAO will oversee scholar achievement, lead strategic teaching and learning initiatives, and manage school performance and leadership development. The role involves fostering a culture of continuous improvement and high expectations, developing strategies to enhance instructional quality, leadership capacity, and equitable learning environments that close opportunity gaps and support scholar success. WHAT YOU WILL DO Strategic Academic Leadership & Visioning Set and drive a vision for scholar achievement. Align instructional systems—curriculum, assessments, interventions, data practices—toward unified grade-level expectations. Ensure staff understand how their work contributes to a consistent scholar experience. Establish ambitious goals for academic growth, college and career readiness, and social-emotional well-being. Shift focus from proficiency metrics to multi-year growth targets, affirming each scholar’s capacity to succeed. Design systems that support long-term acceleration, track incremental progress, and celebrate scholar growth over time. Systems Leadership & Implementation Ensure high-quality, grade-level instruction through shared curricula, collaboration, and instructional leadership. Develop monitoring systems for rigor and equity in classroom instruction. Oversee curriculum development, assessment systems, and programming for diverse learners. Support staff and leaders in executing the instructional vision. Use data to identify trends and gaps, providing targeted supports and interventions. Implement culturally relevant, inclusive practices to improve instruction and close opportunity gaps. Team Leadership & Coaching Drive school performance and leadership development. Support Instructional Superintendents in coaching and developing school leaders. Collaborate on data-driven school improvement plans emphasizing achievement and equity. Resource supports to meet academic, operational, and cultural goals. Work with leadership teams to prioritize impactful instructional initiatives. Develop progress monitoring systems and share updates with stakeholders, including the Board. Equity & Inclusion Leadership Champion equity and inclusion, ensuring access to quality learning for all scholars. Address opportunity gaps through equitable practices. Engage families and communities to foster inclusive, culturally affirming environments. Support educators in planning and collaborating around each scholar’s needs. WHO YOU ARE An ideal candidate: Deeply committed to anti-racist, pro-Black community building and equitable outcomes. Experienced as a senior instructional leader with a record of improving scholar achievement and closing gaps. Expertise in curriculum, data-informed decision-making, and school improvement. Proven success in coaching and managing school leaders. Skilled in leading diverse teams and building trust across stakeholders. Excellent communicator, able to articulate a compelling vision. Multicultural competence with a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and anti-racism. Self-aware, humble, and ethical in leadership. Requirements MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution (master’s or doctorate preferred). Minimum of seven years’ progressive leadership in secondary education, including: Successful experience as a school principal or leader driving scholar achievement. Experience in large urban district or network-level roles overseeing multiple schools with significant gains. Strong commitment to educational equity and excellence in Los Angeles. WORK LOCATION This is a hybrid role based in Los Angeles, involving work from home, the network office, and school visits. A $400 work-from-home setup allowance and a $100 monthly stipend are provided. Benefits COMPENSATION & BENEFITS Salary: $205,000 - $260,000, commensurate with experience. Relocation bonus: $5,000 (individual) or $7,500 (families/partners). Health insurance: Premiums covered for individuals; $1,000/month toward family plans. Retirement: 7.5% employer contribution annually. Paid leave: 3 weeks PTO plus 27 holidays (total 8.5 weeks). Professional development: $500/year stipend for home office staff.
