Position Overview
Our Village United, Inc. (OVU), headquartered in Atlanta, GA, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing small businesses. OVU is seeking a self-motivated, strategic, and execution-oriented Communications Manager to serve as the organization’s communications lead. This individual will play a foundational role in building OVU’s communications function by developing systems, creating high-impact content, amplifying our story, and shaping how we engage the world. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and impeccable storyteller who can lead internal and external communications while also doing the work: writing, designing, posting, pitching, and tracking results. They must be self-directed, organized , and capable of managing multiple projects with minimal oversight. Experience managing freelance creatives, vendors, or consultants is essential to support storytelling, design, and production needs. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in an entrepreneurial, mission-driven environment and can build infrastructure while executing tasks in real-time. Key Responsibilities
Strategy & Leadership
Develop and implement a multi-channel communications strategy aligned with OVU’s mission and strategic goals.
Serve as a thought partner to the Executive Director and leadership team on messaging, visibility, and brand strategy.
Build communications infrastructure including brand guidelines, editorial calendar, asset library, messaging templates, and workflow systems.
Track performance metrics and audience engagement to inform decision-making and optimize messaging.
Content Creation & Storytelling
Create compelling, culturally fluent content that communicates OVU’s mission, impact, and community stories across web, social, email, and print.
Write and edit press releases, blog posts, speeches, newsletters, impact reports, and donor materials.
Lead entrepreneur storytelling initiatives through interviews, photography, and video content production (in-house or via contractors).
Develop talking points and messaging toolkits for events, media appearances, and leadership engagements.
Digital Communications & Social Media
Manage OVU’s digital presence and voice across all platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, Threads, etc.).
Design and implement email marketing campaigns using Mailchimp or similar tools.
Keep the website (WordPress) updated with fresh content, program updates, and resources.
Ensure all messaging reflects brand standards and is accessible, inclusive, and tailored to the audience.
Media Relations & External Visibility
Cultivate relationships with local and national journalists, editors, and media outlets.
Secure earned media placements and coordinate interviews, op-eds, and feature stories.
Maintain a media contact database and archive of press mentions.
Brand & Visual Communications
Ensure a cohesive and consistent brand identity across all platforms and materials.
Design or oversee the production of visual assets using Canva , Adobe Creative Suite , or freelance support.
Create branded collateral for programs, events, and fundraising efforts.
Collaboration & Team Building
Collaborate with program, development, and operations teams to align messaging and support organizational priorities.
Manage freelance contractors (designers, videographers, copywriters) and interns as needed.
Lay the groundwork for a future communications team as the organization grows.
Represent OVU at events, activations, and in partner communications when needed.
Qualifications
Required:
Minimum 5 years of experience in communications, public relations, or marketing—ideally in a nonprofit, mission-driven, or entrepreneurial setting.
Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills with a portfolio of cross-platform content.
Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines with limited supervision.
Self-motivated with a proven ability to work independently and proactively.
Experience managing freelancers or external vendor
s for creative, media, or production projects.
Proficiency in tools such as: Experience with audience segmentation and A/B testing for content performance Mailchimp or other email marketing platforms
WordPress (basic web content updates)
Canva , Adobe Creative Suite (graphic design and collateral)
Zapier (workflow automation)
CRM systems like
Monday.com,
S alesforce or HubSpot
Demonstrated cultural fluency and commitment to racial and economic equity.
Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% domestically for field communications, storytelling, and events.
Preferred but Not Required (Marketing-Aligned Skills):
Experience with digital advertising (e.g., Facebook Ads Manager, Google Ads)
Basic understanding of SEO and analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics)
Experience with lead generation or campaign-based marketing strategies
Exposure to program launches, fundraising campaigns, or growth initiatives in a nonprofit or small business context
Work Environment & Schedule
Hybrid role based in Atlanta, GA
Requires up to 50% domestic travel
Occasional evenings and weekends for major events, activations, and storytelling needs
Compensation & Benefits
Location: Atlanta, GA (Hybrid)
Salary: $65,000- $68,000annually
