Redwood Materials Redwood Materials is seeking a mechanical engineer with extensive experience in designing electrochemical cells and systems. This engineer will drive the design and deployment of electrochemical systems to convert lithium-ion battery waste material into useful products. You will use your mechanical design skills to optimize cell designs and develop custom balance-of-plant equipment to development material conversion processes that align with business goals. You will drive designs through the whole design lifecycle, from concept through prototype, testing, pilot, and commercial installation. You will be expected to collaborate closely with the prototype machine shops, electrochemical device experts, and other mechanical engineers focused on the design of chemical plant equipment. Responsibilities include designing, building, prototyping, and commissioning electrochemical cells at lab, pilot, and production scale; designing, building, and testing custom balance-of-plant equipment; developing mechanical component and assembly cost models; defining requirements for integrating electrochemical systems into battery recycling plants; participating in verification and validation testing; collaborating with R&D electrochemical engineers and plant design teams; executing mechanical FEA and CFD simulations; and producing CAD models, engineering drawings, and bills of material. Desired qualifications include a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline, 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience, expertise in electrochemical cell or system design, experience in prototype building and testing, proficiency in SolidWorks and engineering drawings with GD&T knowledge, and experience in mechanical FEA and CFD. The role requires hands-on lab work, including standing and operating equipment, and involves working in office, machine shop, wet laboratory, chemical plant, and outdoor test sites with exposure to hazardous materials and electrical hazards.
