The University of Virginia Department of Music invites applications for the position of Director of Jazz Performance, to begin in the 20252026 academic year (anticipated start date: August 10, 2025). This is a full-time academic position on the academic general faculty offering an exciting opportunity to lead and expand UVA's jazz program while engaging with a vibrant community of musicians, scholars, and students. We seek a candidate with a strong performance and teaching profile in jazz studies and music of the African diaspora, whose creative practice reflects innovation. The successful candidate will: Direct the UVA Jazz Ensemble. Teach courses determined by their qualifications and the department's needs. Collaborate with faculty and contribute to the department's academic and performance programs. We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate: A commitment to teaching both majors and non-majors in a liberal arts context. The ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, and staff. An imaginative vision for integrating jazz performance with related programs and initiatives at UVA, such as Composition and Computer Technologies, American Studies, the Institute for the Humanities and Global Culture, the Carter G. Woodson Institute of African and African American Studies, the Rap Lab, and/or the Sound Justice Lab. The UVA Music Department is home to a vibrant performance program featuring ensembles spanning new music, jazz, orchestra, wind ensemble, and more. The department also offers cutting-edge programs in Composition and Computer Technologies and Critical and Comparative Studies in Music. Qualifications: PhD or terminal degree in Music or related field or Master's degree in Music or related field and significant experience required Minimum of two (2) years of collegiate teaching experience preferred Distinction in artistic performance, preferably on the national level and international level Expertise with jazz ensemble coaching Experience with recruiting and events/festival planning Experience with managing scholarships and budgets preferred Evidence of collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and community engagement Application Instructions: To Apply: Visit
