Angel S. Byrd, MD, PhD, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology at Howard University College of Medicine, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to aid in basic, translational immunology based research, including, but not limited to, neutrophil isolation, cell culture, protein and nucleic acid isolation, western blot analysis, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), quantitative real-time PCR, tissue biobanking, among other tasks. No supervisory duties. Internal contacts include assistant/associate deans, directors, department heads/chairs, faculty, staff and students at the College and school levels; and, deans, directors and executive level officers at University level. External contacts include governmental agencies such as Federal and the District of Columbia Agencies, health professionals, students, parents and the general public. Fulfill tasks in collaborative team of students and researchers from Howard University. Principal responsibilities include: investigating the immunopathological contributions to dermatologic diseases; assisting in basic, translational immunology based research; exploring the role of immune cells in Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS); fostering collaborative approaches to studying and understanding the pathophysiology of HS; coordinating and assuring development of pertinent reports and their timely delivery; conducting data collection, statistical analysis, and data interpretation responsibilities; participating in grant writing, development of manuscripts and reports, and conduct of primary and secondary data analyses; participating in weekly and/or bi-weekly group meetings, and professional training with or without students. Core competencies include: experience in basic and molecular laboratory techniques; excellent written and communication skills; a passion for research and translational medicine; demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent teamwork and communication skills; scientific writing skills demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications; ability to acquire accurate, reproducible data; critical eye towards consistency, reproducibility, and the scientific method in general; excellent project and time management skills; strong interpersonal and mentoring skills; advocate for safety and ethics in the workplace; demonstrated computing experience and knowledge, including software packages such as word processing, database applications, and spreadsheet; competence in both oral and written English and ability to articulate concisely and in a professional manner; ability to maintain confidentiality of information; ability to work effectively in a team-oriented interdisciplinary healthcare environment. Minimum requirements include: a MD; PhD; and/or MD, PhD. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated: excellence in oral communication skills; a commitment to and interest in advising students from diverse backgrounds; effective interpersonal and collaboration skills; an appreciation for the Howard mission; and the ability to contribute to a positive, collegial, work atmosphere.
