Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, this position performs a variety of patient care activities to meet the personal needs and comfort of patients. Responsible to the Nurse Director and/or designee of the patient care unit assigned. Major Responsibilities: Assists in data collection and care and treatment of patients. Accurately and as directed obtains and records patient data; vital signs, 12 lead EKGs, testing of specimens, patient weights and measurements, Intake and Output. Assists patients with activities of daily living, feeding, personal hygiene, etc. Assists with positioning, turning, and range of motion exercises. Appropriately performs treatments such as application of heat and cold; application of ace bandages, binders, stockings; application of restraints under the direction of a nurse. Applies and removes telemetry under the direction of the nurse. Maintains the cleanliness and safety of assigned patient care areas. Reports status and/or changes in the patient's condition to the supervising registered nurse or licensed practical nurse appropriately and in a timely manner. Documents patient care activities accurately and completely and according to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Performs clerical functions as requested. Transports patients, equipment, and collects specimens, etc., as requested. Appropriately assembles, sets up, and cleans equipment for various procedures. Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities: Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Attends a variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients, and visitors. Maintains regular, reliable, and predictable attendance. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: High School Diploma/GED. Current Basic Life Support Certification required within 30 days of hire. Suicide Prevention and De-escalation learning modules, as well as Constant Observation Training must be completed if a PCA I will be working as a Patient Observer in the Medical/Surgical area for Suicide risk patients during the first 90 days of employment. Preferred: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Experience/Skills: Required: Must possess the following skills: reading, writing, and simple mathematical calculations. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups. Integrity and flexibility. Ability to communicate effectively verbally, if necessary. Manual dexterity required to perform tests and to complete treatments. Ability to understand and follow through on instructions. Preferred: Recent sub-acute or acute care patient care assistant experience.
