General Description: The Assistant Director of the LGBTQ Student Center serves as an essential member of the Student Life team, reporting directly to the Director of the LGBTQ Student Center. The Center provides support, fosters belonging, and promotes inclusion for students, faculty, staff, and alumni of all genders, expressions, and orientations. Its focus includes education, outreach, programming, intergroup engagement, empowerment, and advocacy to increase visibility within the university community. The Department is part of the Division of Student Affairs and collaborates with various campus departments and community organizations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Manage, oversee, and assess the Center’s programming and educational initiatives.

Advise and manage the Center’s student assistants and student organizations sponsored by the LGBTQ Student Center.

Support advocacy programs, educational initiatives, and leadership conferences/symposiums sponsored by the Center.

Assist with strategic planning initiatives related to engagement, belonging, education, and LGBTQ+ identity development.

Develop reports, conduct assessments, and prepare semester and annual program reports.

Manage daily operations and support advisement of student leadership and LGBTQ+ organizations, advocacy groups, and programming boards.

Coordinate the departmental calendar of programs and events.

Create university-wide awareness programs about LGBTQ+ identities and student leadership opportunities.

Collaborate with campus units and community agencies to develop initiatives that promote education and belonging.

Manage student employees involved in programming, office functions, and customer service; oversee training, hiring, and evaluation.

Utilize social media to promote programs and connect students with services.

Produce promotional publications, including a bi-weekly e-newsletter called the Pride Press.

Coordinate signature events like LGBTQ+ History Month, Miami Beach Pride, and Lavender Celebration, including stakeholder communication and assessment.

Design and coordinate educational and visibility events such as Rainbow Carnival, World AIDS Day, and Coming Out Day.

Support coordination of student group events and collaborate with campus liaisons and the Student Life team.

Evaluate engagement activities through assessments and develop improvement strategies.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director.

People Management

Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate student employees; set developmental goals.

Assist with training initiatives and provide daily supervision.

Oversee the Engage portal and communicate with community agencies and student groups.

Plan leadership training for student groups and provide advising and advocacy to students.

Support office research, events, and programs.

Financial Responsibility

Serve as budget signatory; oversee budgets for student groups and programs.

Assist with grant proposal development and financial reconciliation.

Decision-Making/Strategy

Contribute to operational and strategic planning discussions.

Make daily decisions to meet department objectives and adhere to policies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to work productively in a fast-paced, diverse environment.

Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Ability to operate independently and professionally.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related programs.

Team-oriented with responsive decision-making skills.

Education & Work Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred in Higher Education Administration or related field.

At least 2 years of relevant experience in Higher Education/Student Affairs.

Experience in programming within Higher Education.

Willingness to work some nights and weekends.
