The National Health Law Program (NHeLP), the nationally recognized leader in advancing health rights for low-income and underserved populations, is seeking an energetic, strategic, and collaborative Executive Director to guide the organization through this challenging era for health justice and Medicaid advocacy. NHeLP is seeking a leader with a proven track record in organizational management, fundraising, and relationship building.

Location: Washington, DC

The Executive Director, reporting to the Board of Directors, will lead a dedicated team of over 60 staff members across the United States, including offices in Washington, DC; Los Angeles, CA; and Chapel Hill, NC. The role involves overseeing an annual budget of approximately $13.7 million and guiding NHeLP’s strategic, operational, programmatic, and financial functions. This leadership transition follows the planned retirement of Elizabeth G. Taylor, who has successfully led NHeLP since 2014.

The next Executive Director will inherit a mission-driven and expanding organization, supported by committed staff who have amplified its national impact. Key responsibilities include advancing NHeLP’s external presence through a bold vision, developing the next strategic plan, aligning resources with mission-critical priorities, and strengthening revenue streams while cultivating new support sources. A steadfast commitment to health equity and justice is central. The leader must demonstrate clarity, courage, and compassion, enhancing NHeLP’s visibility as a powerful voice for health justice.

Ideal candidates will have a deep commitment to social justice, with policy expertise and lived experience. They should understand systemic barriers faced by low-income, underserved, and marginalized communities, and champion strategies that elevate their voices and leadership. Experience in building inclusive teams, empowering staff, and managing remote workforces is essential. Fundraising experience from foundations and individual donors, along with skills in marketing, branding, and board engagement, are required.
