We are seeking a highly technical Senior Database Performance Engineer to join our team in Waltham, MA. The role requires a self-motivated engineer with expertise in SQL database internals to help us assess, understand, and improve the performance of NuoDB.

Working in close collaboration with product teams, this role involves ensuring all new features are delivered with the expected performance level, running experiments and advocating for performance enhancements, sharing and reporting results to ensure performance is at the heart of every development project, and integrating and writing new benchmarks and workloads.

Monitor, assess, and analyze the holistic performance of NuoDB with CI/CD benchmarking tools

Collaborate with product teams to design and implement performance test plans and benchmarks for new features

Own and enhance performance coverage by consulting with developers to identify areas for improvement and expansion

Investigate and diagnose performance issues to identify the root cause of the problems

Explore NuoDB performance boundaries across various environments: public cloud, on-premise, and Kubernetes

Evaluate NuoDB performance compared to our competitor's database using industry-standard benchmarks

Clearly document performance results and share actionable insights with developers

Define and share best practices for NuoDB performance tuning

Foster a culture of collaboration and knowledge-sharing

Qualifications:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent

10+ years of experience working as a performance engineer on a distributed product, ideally on another distributed database

A sharp QA mindset, strong analytical skills, and the ability to break down complex problems into simpler components

Strong experience with Linux and system/resource diagnostic tools such as perf

Experience in SQL, OO Python programming, and shell scripting (i.e., Bash)

Experience writing reliable performance benchmarks and workloads

Experience with monitoring & observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, etc

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Nice to have:

Cloud / SaaS / Kubernetes experience is a strong plus

Experience with Agile methodology

Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, OpenShift)

Experience with distributed systems or micro-services (Docker, Kubernetes)

Experience with SCM and management tools: Git, Jira, Confluence

Keen interest in databases and distributed systems. Tools to monitor and understand their performance profiles. Drive to work on complex problems and break them down into simpler steps.

"Compensation for the role will be commensurate with experience. The total expected compensation range will be between $225,000 to $240,000, representing the base salary (or annualized salary based on estimated hourly compensation) and target bonus".
