Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial appointment requirements are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
Basic Requirements:- U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed if qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA Policy.
- Degree: Doctor of medicine or equivalent from an approved school.
- Licensure: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
- Residency: Completion of an approved residency program leading to board eligibility in a core specialty, approved by the VA.
- Additional Residency Requirements: Includes residencies approved by ACGME, AOA, or equivalent foreign residencies with at least five years of U.S. practice.
- Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA residencies are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and work under supervision.
- Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Specialty Certification: Board certified or eligible in Gastroenterology.
- Physical Requirements: Must meet physical standards, including a pre-employment exam, ability to lift 15-44 pounds, reach above shoulder, use fingers and both hands, walk and stand for extended periods, and distinguish colors. Hearing aids are permitted.
Duties
- This is an open continuous announcement until September 30, 2025, with initial referral cut-off on February 3, 2025, and subsequent biweekly cut-offs.
- Eligible applications received after the initial cut-off will be considered as vacancies arise.

- The Gastroenterologist will provide outpatient, inpatient, and nursing home care, diagnosing and managing gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases, performing procedures such as EGD, colonoscopy, and other advanced GI studies.
- Responsibilities include overseeing conscious sedation, participating in research and education, and meeting academic appointment requirements with UCSF Fresno.
- Involvement in training residents, fellows, and students, as well as participating in rounds, lectures, and quality assurance activities.
- On-call responsibilities will be shared with other staff gastroenterologists. Participation in committees and oversight of contracts are also required.
