The Security Enterprise Solutions (SES) operation at Leidos is seeking a talented Senior Systems Engineer to contribute to our innovative team focused on developing cutting-edge security systems for transportation applications. Our facility is located in Vista, CA .

The Ports and Borders (P&B) business unit specializes in designing and manufacturing sophisticated security products such as radiation detectors, spectrometers, and X-ray scanners used at border crossings, airports, and seaports.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as both a technical leader and contributor within a collaborative engineering team composed of Scientists and Engineers to create next-generation X-ray security equipment.
  • Design PLC-based machine control systems, including circuit design, schematics, programming, motion control, and power distribution.
  • Develop printed circuits, oversee PCB layout, fabrication, and assembly processes.
  • Generate comprehensive engineering documentation such as design specifications, interface control documents, schematics, wiring diagrams, and bills of materials.
  • Support sustaining engineering for existing products to address obsolescence issues and implement feature updates.
  • Troubleshoot both existing and new designs at the component level, executing root cause analysis.
  • Work independently or lead a team of 2-3 Electrical Engineers on projects, handling all aspects from conceptualization to implementation.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or a related field with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in a technical leadership role, responsible for the design and architecture of complex systems.
  • Proven track record of managing product or subsystem development from R&D to production, including writing specifications, creating design documentation, prototyping, and conducting troubleshooting.
  • Expertise in product development processes, including specifications, design reviews, and engineering drawing standards.
  • In-depth knowledge of industrial control system design, including PLCs, machine safety protocols, and power distribution.
  • Strong background in digital and/or analog circuit design.
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (e.g., Orcad, PADS, Altium).
  • Familiarity with PCB design and fabrication methodologies.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as C, VHDL, and IEC61131.
  • Proficiency in using electrical test equipment including oscilloscopes, DMMs, function generators, and bench supplies.
  • Ability to safely work around X-ray radiation producing machines, high voltages, and heavy machinery.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to collaborate with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and technicians across various disciplines.
  • Commitment to adhering to safety precautions in industrial settings, including handling temperature, humidity, and noise levels safely.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with radiation detection technologies and data acquisition systems.
  • Familiarity with X-ray producing equipment.
  • Eligibility to obtain a SECRET clearance and access Sensitive Security Information (SSI).

Pay Range: $104,650.00 - $189,175.00
