Job DescriptionJob Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Scientist to lead the development of demand prediction models that help restaurant operators make smarter ordering decisions. In this role, you'll work with large-scale purchasing and operational data to deliver accurate, timely, and actionable forecasts that directly impact efficiency, revenue, and customer satisfaction. You'll be a core member of our data science team, applying advanced time series methods and machine learning models to the unique dynamics of the foodservice industry.

Who we are:

Buyers Edge Platform stands at the forefront of revolutionizing the foodservice industry through technology, purchasing power and partnerships. We are dedicated to empowering stakeholders across the entire foodservice ecosystem (operators, distributors, manufacturers) with efficiency and unprecedented visibility. With a diverse portfolio of over a dozen brands, our mission is clear: to reduce costs, streamline the foodservice supply chain, and propel the industry from manual to automated.

Today, we are one of the largest players in foodservice, with over 200K operator locations across North America and over $50 billion of aggregated spend volume. Our commitment to foodservice excellence is proven in four distinct areas of value: Digital Procurement Network, Fresh Solutions, Supply Chain Management, and Software. Buyers Edge Platform is not just a provider – we are a strategic partner on the journey towards a more efficient, connected, and automated future for the foodservice industry.

We are focused on performance, not presence. What matters is not that you are sitting in front of your computer from 9am to 5pm, but rather that you build highly effective and efficient software within agreed timelines. In practice, this might mean working extra hours some days to hit that while having other days that allow for more free time and recovery. Our goal is for Buyers Edge Platform to be a place where people are able to work in a way that is the most efficient and effective for them. This will enable us all to enjoy the solutions we build and the team we are on. We are unable to offer work sponsorship for this role.

Your impact:

Design, build, and maintain forecasting models to predict demand across products, distributors, and customer locations

Leverage a variety of methods including statistical models (ARIMA, exponential smoothing), machine learning (XGBoost), and deep learning (TFT, LSTM with TensorFlow)

Explore and integrate external signals such as holidays, seasonality, and weather patterns to improve forecast accuracy

Work closely with internal stakeholders across Product and Engineering to align model outputs with business use cases

Build clean, efficient data pipelines in Python using pandas and SQL to prepare features and historical training data

Monitor, evaluate, and improve model performance using appropriate error metrics (e.g., MAPE, RMSE)

Develop automated evaluation and retraining workflows for long-term scalability

Document methodology, assumptions, and model limitations to enable cross-team understanding and reproducibility

Present results clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, driving decisions with data-backed insights

Autonomously propose model improvements, research new approaches, and prioritize projects based on business value

About you:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a related field.

3-5+ years of hands-on experience in data science with a focus on forecasting, demand planning, or time series modeling.

Expert-level proficiency in Python and pandas for data analysis and feature engineering

3–5+ years of experience working as a Data Scientist, with a strong emphasis on forecasting or time series modeling

Strong knowledge of forecasting models including ARIMA, Prophet, XGBoost, and TensorFlow-based models (especially Temporal Fusion Transformers or LSTMs)

Solid understanding of SQL for querying large datasets

Experience with model evaluation metrics, hyperparameter tuning, and time series cross-validation techniques

Familiarity with cloud tools (e.g., AWS S3, EC2)

Strong communication skills — capable of translating model results into business recommendations

Experience in the restaurant, supply chain, or foodservice industry a plus but not required
