ELANTAS North America is seeking a
Director of Research & Development (R&D)
to lead the creation, alignment, and execution of strategies for R&D programs, policies, and procedures. This role is based
on-site in St. Louis, MO , and requires travel to other US facilities. As a critical resource, the Director will collaborate with Global R&D teams and Business Line Directors to align development, lab testing, and technical services resources with business priorities. Specific Responsibilities: Develops and recommends organization-wide technical research policies and programs needed to support profitable growth of the organization. Establishes and administers procedures pertaining to the discovery of new products, the alteration and improvement of existing products, and to the design of procedures and specifications of these products. Recommends budget requirements and takes action to guarantee effective research and development performance within approved budgets. Manages the R&D groups within the organization, including development groups, testing and analysis groups, and groups with support functions. Includes setting of department policies, maintenance of department Lab Manual, and responsibility of department audits. Maintains the project management system and stage gate processes for R&D projects, including ensuring documentation in the system, participation in stage gate meetings and decisions, and requested reporting to the ELANTAS CTO. Networks and collaborates with the global R&D community to support global topics, including participation in the global Technical Steering Committee, management of technical transfer topics between regions, support to the ELANTAS CTO, and management of global research projects assigned to the company by the Technical Steering Committee. Establishes and maintains adequate records of formula, process methods, and product construction standards. Includes records required to support patent action. Assists the Patent Counsel in obtaining patent protection for inventions. Keeps abreast of current technical progress by participation in technical groups and research of pertinent technical literature. Prepares and presents papers and reports of a technical nature as required. Works closely with Procurement to maintain economic and logistics balance by reviewing raw material sources. Manages support expectations in regard to current and upcoming projects. Collaborates with stakeholders across functions on the prioritization of research activities based on the needs identified and resources available. Hires research staff, ensures training and development activities are provided to optimize staff skills, conducts performance appraisals, and develops individual objectives for staff. Ensures a safe workplace environment. Provides technical assistance and consultation to other departments, as needed Education & Experience: Ph.D. in Chemistry Minimum of 10 years related experience. Experience leading New Product Introduction (NPI) processes. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent oral and written English communications skills. Ability to work collaboratively with all relevant internal and external stakeholders in an international business environment. Strong leadership orientation. Strategic orientation, with ability to balance change management. Ability to prioritize and balance competing organizational priorities. Ability to demonstrate and foster safe working behavior in the team. Physical Requirements: Must be able to drive a car and fly on a plane, including overnight travel. Must be able to see, speak and read in English. Must tolerate working environment with inside ambient and outdoor temperatures. Requires (Near/Far/Depth/Color) vision to utilize equipment and material. Must walk to various areas of the plant.
