Zoox
Senior/Staff Systems Engineer, Fail-Operational for Autonomous Robotaxi Operatio
Zoox, Foster City, California, United States, 94420
Zoox is on an ambitious journey to develop a full-stack autonomous mobility solution for cities. As Zoox launches our technology on public roads, we are seeking an experienced systems engineer who can bring the system engineering and fail-operational disciplines to Zoox’s unique autonomous robotaxi services, ensuring safe and continuous operations of Zoox technology. The role will focus on fail-operational performance of the robotaxi system including off-vehicle connectivity equipment and software, as well as remote operator workflows.
In this role, you will:
Performance Metrics:
Define, develop, and evolve fail-operational metrics to assess robotaxi journey completion, support services, and the readiness of the network and operational systems. Proactive hazard analysis:
Lead and perform hazard analysis to identify potential causes of service disruptions in the operations of robotaxi before they manifest in the field. Identify requirements and suggest risk mitigation strategies. Risk Mitigation:
Lead initiatives to develop prevention and mitigation strategies for service disruptions, collaborating with cross-functional teams (engineering, operations, legal, safety policy, manufacturing) on hardware, software, operational, and process improvements. System Analysis & Verification:
Conduct in-depth system analysis to create comprehensive verification and validation strategies for network and cloud software performance. Cross-functional Alignment:
Serve as the primary contact for collaborations with various stakeholders (e.g., Product/Cloud software, Firmware, Vehicle Engineering) and other SDMA subteams (e.g., functional safety, autonomy validation). Reporting:
Author validation clearance reports to support milestone approvals. Qualifications
Bachelors degree in a relevant engineering field with 7-9 years of experience, including 3+ years in complex engineering system operations. Strong background in Systems Engineering. Experience in remote operations, cloud platforms, data transmission, wireless communications, network protocols and architecture. Proficiency in data analysis, performance tracking, quantitative risk assessment, and issue mitigation in real-world remote operations. Proven ability to lead complex cross-functional projects with high EQ and a collaborative, empathetic approach. Bonus Qualifications
8+ years senior leadership experience with complex network systems or remote field operations in safety relevant domains. Fail operational or fault management experience in the automotive industry, the autonomous driving technology industry, or the commercial airline industry. Solid understanding of software and network architecture principles and design patterns, and proficiency in either Linux, C++, Python or Java. Experience with Cloud computing (AWS, Azure, GCP) and with Telecom Carrier networks (LTE and 5G) and standards (3GPP), or network fundamentals and standards (gRPC, DDS, RestfulAPI). Experience in developing operational tools/features and human factors studies. Familiarity with industry safety standards such as MIL-STD-882, ISO 26262, ISO 21448, etc. $166,000 - $277,000 a year
