As a Senior Staff Software Engineer in our Engineering Effectiveness team, you’ll be at the center of Grainger’s mission to elevate developer experience across the organization. You’ll drive architectural decisions, evolve platform tooling, and lead high-impact engagements across domains to enhance system resilience, scalability, and developer productivity. This role isn’t about maintaining the status quo. It’s about influencing the future of engineering at Grainger — from core infrastructure to how our teams design, build, and ship software every day. You Will: Engage with product engineers and teams to understand how to create a frictionless, joyful experience that drives systemic change in Grainger’s delivery capabilities. Collaborate with the Engineering Enablement Team to design and deliver impactful consulting sessions and 'dojo' experiences empowering product engineering teams. Provide hands-on development support during embedded engineering engagements, guiding product teams through all SDLC phases. Partner with the Delivery Insights Team to generate insights that improve engineering excellence and enable data-driven strategies. Work with the Core Engineering Team to enhance the Internal Developer Portal (IDP), evolve software templates, and promote adoption of shared workflows. Help shape and drive Grainger’s overall Developer Experience (DevEx). You Have: 10+ years of software engineering experience in large, distributed environments working across multiple teams. Strong engineering empathy, with a passion for pair programming and supporting engineers at all skill levels. Cloud experience (AWS, GCP, Azure) across UI, API, and CLI. Experience with infrastructure as code and automation. Knowledge of cloud-native, event-driven microservices architectures, including operational concerns (Kafka, AWS SQS). Experience with CI/CD principles and best practices. Understanding of containerized workloads at scale (Docker, Kubernetes), APIs, and web services. Ability to tune performance and capacity of large-scale systems. Familiarity with DevOps tools like Ansible, GitHub, Terraform. Experience with observability and monitoring tools (Datadog, Dynatrace, Splunk). Experience with Atlassian products (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Bamboo). Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent experience.
