Irys Technologies is seeking a Linux/Unix Engineer in the Austin or San Antonio area with deep expertise in Red Hat Linux to support our secure, mission-critical systems for Department of Defense (DoD) clients. This position will be responsible for implementing and maintaining systems that comply with FIPS and NIST standards, ensuring robust security and performance for sensitive workloads. Proficiency in GitHub Flow is required for managing system configurations and scripts.

Primarily Remote; In-office may be required on an as needed basis. If needed, the office is located in downtown San Antonio, TX. Responsibilities Administer and secure Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems in production environments. Implement FIPS 140-2/3 and NIST 800-53 standards for DoD compliance. Configure and harden Linux systems using tools like SELinux, firewalld, and OpenSCAP. Automate system provisioning, configuration, and monitoring using Ansible, Puppet, or Bash, managed via GitHub Flow. Manage authentication and access control (e.g., SSSD, Kerberos, LDAP). Monitor system performance and security using tools like Nagios, Prometheus, or Splunk. Collaborate with security teams to conduct audits and remediate vulnerabilities. Document system configurations, compliance reports, and operational procedures. Provide on-call support for critical incidents (rotational basis). Required Skills and Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience). 3+ years of experience in Linux/Unix system administration, with a focus on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Deep understanding of FIPS 140-2/3 and NIST 800-53 compliance requirements. Expertise in Linux security hardening (SELinux, AppArmor, iptables). Proficiency in GitHub Flow, including branching, pull requests, and collaborative workflows for configuration management. Proficiency in automation tools (Ansible, Puppet, or Chef). Experience with scripting (Bash, Python, or Perl) for system administration tasks. Familiarity with virtualization (KVM, VMware) and containerization (Docker, Podman). Knowledge of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, NTP) and storage (LVM, RAID). Strong troubleshooting skills and experience with log analysis (e.g., journalctl, rsyslog). Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance (US citizenship required). Preferred Skills Experience with other Unix systems (CentOS, Ubuntu, or Solaris). Knowledge of DoD STIGs (Security Technical Implementation Guides) and RMF (Risk Management Framework). Familiarity with cloud-based Linux deployments (AWS EC2, Azure VMs). Understanding of high-availability clustering (Pacemaker, Corosync). Experience with compliance auditing tools (OpenSCAP, Nessus).
