Sterilization technicians ensure that instruments and operatories are properly sterilized and set up for dental procedures. They process instruments, monitor sterilizers and assist with turning over and setting up treatment rooms; some also help expose digital images, escort patients and record exam notes. General duties include turning on and maintaining equipment, disinfecting operatories, restocking supplies and assisting the front office.
Responsibilities Include

  • Decontaminating, packaging and sterilizing instruments using appropriate protocols and monitoring biological and chemical indicators.
  • Setting up and turning over operatories between patients, ensuring that all surfaces are disinfected and properly stocked.
  • Maintaining sterilization equipment, performing routine tests (e.g., autoclave spore testing) and documenting results.
  • Ordering and organizing dental supplies; assisting with inventory control and equipment maintenance.
  • Escorting patients, taking digital radiographs (if state allows) or assisting the dentist with charting.
  • Supporting the front office by restocking forms and supplies and maintaining a clean, safe work environment.
Ideal Qualifications
  • Highschool diploma or equivalent with experience in dental or healthcare sterilization preferred.
  • Knowledge of instrument processing, infectioncontrol protocols and safety procedures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain sterilization equipment and to follow written protocols precisely.
  • Good organizational skills and reliability for Sunday-Thursday morning/evening shifts (8 a.m.-8 p.m.).
