General Summary:
The Senior Director of Surgical Services is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational management, and clinical excellence of all surgical services across Bayhealth. This role ensures high-quality, patient-centered care, efficient use of resources, and adherence to regulatory standards across inpatient and outpatient surgical settings at Bayhealth Kent Campus, Bayhealth Sussex Campus and the Ambulatory Surgery Center. The Senior Director fosters a culture of continuous improvement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and staff engagement within the Magnet nursing culture to advance surgical services and meet the evolving needs of the community.
Responsibilities:
1. Provide strategic and operational direction and leadership for all surgical departments, including operating rooms, pre-operative and post-anesthesia care units, sterile processing, endoscopy, and related perioperative areas. 2. Participates in the triad governance of the surgical services division with a high degree of collaboration with the chief of anesthesia and surgeon leaders. 3. Develop and implement long-term goals and short-term operational plans in alignment with the health system's mission, values, and objectives. 4. Ensure safe, high-quality patient care through collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing leaders, and support staff. 5. Monitor and improve surgical performance metrics such as patient outcomes, safety indicators, OR utilization, case volume, turnover times, and patient satisfaction. 6. Oversee the development and management of departmental budgets, including capital planning and resource allocation. 7. Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies (e.g., CMS, The Joint Commission, OSHA) and maintain standards for licensure and accreditation. 8. Partner with medical staff leadership to recruit and retain qualified surgical staff; promote professional development and succession planning. 9. Lead initiatives for process improvement, standardization of practices, and the integration of evidence-based protocols and technology. 10. Direct and support the implementation of electronic health records, surgical scheduling systems, and other clinical informatics tools to enhance workflow and care delivery. 11. Foster a positive work environment that supports team engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a patient-first culture. 12. Serve as a key liaison between administration, medical staff, and frontline employees to ensure transparent communication and effective operational execution. 13. Respond to emergent issues, including patient safety concerns, staffing concerns, or operational disruptions, with decisiveness and accountability. 14. Represent the surgical services division in leadership meetings, board presentations, and community health initiatives. 15. Provides direction and oversight of the reporting of outcomes within the division. 16. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
Education: Master Degree Nursing Or other related healthcare field Credential(s): Registered Nurse Experience: Required:
5 or more years of progressive leadership experience in perioperative service.
Preferred : Experience in leadership in Magnet designated health system. Preferred Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
Education: Credential(s): Certified Perioperative Nurse; Certified Nurse Manager and Leader; Certified Executive Nursing Practice Experience:
