Part-Time Network Engineer
The Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) at Penn State is seeking a Part-Time Network Engineer to join our Systems Engineering team. ICDS works with researchers from more than 70 academic departments from nearly all of Penn State's academic colleges and campuses, facilitating new collaborations, funding new areas of research, collaborating to overcome computational and data science challenges, building a diverse community of scholars, and providing a robust supercomputer for the Penn State community, called Roar. ICDS seeks to equip researchers with the most cutting-edge computing tools and resources to further their science, and as a part of ICDS, you will be contributing to this goal. The position will report to the Systems Engineering Lead. As Part-Time Network Engineer, your responsibilities include: Design, implement, and maintain network infrastructure including Juniper, Arista, and Cisco platforms. Support and troubleshoot wired and wireless networks across multiple sites. Manage and automate network configurations using Python and Ansible. Collaborate with security teams to ensure compliance and performance. Monitor and respond to system alerts, outages, and performance issues. Assist in the deployment of cloud-based environments (Azure, AWS). Maintain documentation and contribute to infrastructure planning and upgrades. Successful candidates should be able to demonstrate: Extensive experience with enterprise networking (BGP, OSPF, EVPN/VXLAN, 802.1x). Hands-on expertise with Juniper, Arista, Cisco, Palo Alto, and Aruba ClearPass. Proficiency in scripting and automation (Python, Ansible). Familiarity with cloud platforms, virtualization (VMware NSX-T), and micro-segmentation. Strong background in network security, DDoS mitigation, and IPAM solutions. Juniper certifications (JNCIP-ENT, JNCIA-MistAI) preferred.
