The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Matter-Framer to join its Exhibition Design and Production (ED&P) Department. The Matter-Framer focuses on the production of high-quality wood frames and also aids the Frame Shop in other tasks as needed. Responsibilities: Sets-up, measures, and cuts mats and frames to precise specifications. Following archival guidelines, mounts and hinges works of art on paper into mats. Fabricates specialty mounts for books and other unusual objects. Inserts matted artworks into frames. Inserts paintings into frames. Fabricates custom-designed frames to house artwork with exceptional requirements. Applies specialty finishes to regular and custom wood molding. Maintains shop tools and inventory of materials in proper order. Sands, seals, paints or waxes wood frames. Cuts Plexiglas or glass to size. Assists in the construction of simple wood frames or parts of frames. Assists in the training Departmental Preparators. Assists Senior Matter-Framers as needed. Perform other related tasks as directed. Requirements: Bachelor's degree and three or more years of experience as Matter/Framer or equivalent. Complete understanding of and working competence with all standard frame shop tools and equipment, including mat-cutters, table saws, specialty glues and precision measuring devices. Knowledgeable in joinery and wood fabrication techniques. Basic knowledge of contemporary and period framing materials and techniques. Passionate learner who is able to solve problems and gain new skills along with being able to communicate effectively to the team. Ability to bend, stoop and reach overhead; often lifting large and/or heavy items. Ability to work independently and also in close collaboration with co-workers. Ability to execute tasks with maximum precision and quality. MoMA participates in the TSA's Certified Cargo Screening Facility Program. Therefore, if hired, individual must successfully complete a security threat assessment through the Department of Homeland Security in order to participate. Reports to:
